If you're friends with persistently tardy dinner guests, a savvy new table keeps your food warm and drinks cold as you wait (once again, sigh).
Designers Kram/Weisshaar have debuted a wafer-thin table, the SmartSlab, which miraculously squeezes heating and cooling units, inductive cooking and charging modules, and wireless transponders and antennas into its sleek design. It may just be smarter than your car, and is one of many new smart tables that combine dinner with technology — including one IKEA table that suggests recipes for you and another that heats food with your cell phone.
The SmartSlab table cooks food with induction rings in its surface, helpful for the chef who wants to finish dinner and entertain simultaneously. Just inches away, heat-transferring devices keep drinks chilled at 23 degrees Fahrenheit and plate-sized heating elements keep food toasty at 108.5 degrees Fahrenheit, according to a company press release.
The top layer of the SmartSlab is made of SapienStone, a ceramic material that is easy to clean. In case things in the kitchen heat up, the material is also reportedly impervious to microbes, scratches, fire, frost, and thermal shock.
In other words, it's brilliant.
If the heating, cooling, and cooking devices don't satiate your hunger for table tech, the circuitry can be customized to include wireless charging modules, Wi-Fi base stations, and touch-control panels. A plain old kitchen table has never seemed so yawn-worthy.
