In baseball, Grand Rapids suffered a rough ride in the AAA quarterfinals, while Martin Sleen paced the Hermantown track team in AA state prelims.
The Hilltoppers got nine hits from seven different batters and more than four innings of strong pitching from an unexpected source.
The Panthers' only senior had a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning to advance to the Class A semifinal Thursday.
The state meet continues Wednesday at St. Michael-Albertville High School, while state golf for boys and girls concludes Wednesday.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
