Two Highlands Ranch residents have been arrested after a device, a possible “booby trap,” set outside their front door injured a person, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

On Friday deputies responded to a report of a person being injured by a possible “booby trap,” according to a sheriff’s news release.

Deputies met with a person who told them at about 2 p.m. March 9 “he was conducting business” on Ashburn Court when he went to the front door of a residence and heard a loud boom. The man told investigators that a wire was caught around his lower leg and that he experienced ear pain and altered vision. The victim said the wire was suspended above a step leading to the front door.

After the incident, the victim was confronted by a man thought to be the homeowner, according to the release. The victim left the area, with help from a co-worker, and went to a hospital.

“A few days later, while detectives were investigating the incident, they saw a similar device, as described by the victim, in the same area, on the steps leading to the front door,” the release said.

Officers on Wednesday served a search warrant at the residence, where the wired device was still in place, the release said. A similar device was found on back steps of the house. After a short stand-off, two people were taken into custody.

The suspects, a man and a woman, are being investigated for second-degree assault and felony menacing, both felonies, and prohibited use of a weapon, a misdemeanor. Their bond was set at $25,000 each.

Both defendants appeared at an advisement hearing Thursday, according to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office. Their next court appearance, which will be virtual, is scheduled Tuesday.
