KINGSTON, N.Y. — RUPCO, a low-income housing provider, will open the Ulster County Housing Choice Voucher Waiting List, also known as Section 8, for those who are homeless.

The Ulster County HCV Waiting List will be open from Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 9 a.m. through Tuesday,. Feb. 13 at 4 p.m.

The Housing Choice Voucher Program provides rental assistance for families with low or modest incomes to enable them to choose and lease affordable, privately owned rental housing. The participant’s rent is limited to 30% to 40% of their adjusted monthly income, and a subsidy covers the remaining portion.

Eligible applicants must be experiencing homelessness, and their annual household incomes must not exceed the limits established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Starting on Jan. 30, applicants can download an application online from www.rupco.org or pick up a hard copy at RUPCO’s office, 289 Fair St. Kingston. All applications must be completed, signed, and mailed or dropped off at the mailbox in the lobby of 289 Fair St. No faxed or e-mailed applications will be accepted.

RUPCO will be hosting application assistance sessions at 2 Main St. Kingston on Tuesday, Jan. 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Wednesday, Jan. 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Thursday, Feb. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Tuesday, Feb. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Wednesday, Feb. 7, from 10 a.m. to  2 p.m.; Thursday, Feb. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Tuesday, Feb. 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

All eligible applications received during the open window period will be entered in a lottery to determine placement on the waitlist. Applicants will receive a written notice by March 31, confirming their eligibility and if they were added to the waitlist. If selected, applicants must live and use the Housing Choice Voucher in Ulster County for the first 12-month cycle.
