The West Pittston Library helped children under the age of 6 ring in the near year on Tuesday with a “Countdown to Noon.” The celebration served as substitute for children who were unable to stay up late. The event featured books, songs, crafts and a countdown to noon.
Daniella Ranieli scored 21 points and Maddie Karp added 17 as Pittston Area downed Wyoming Area, 51-24, in the championship game of the Anthony “Badger” Marseco Memorial Girls Basketball Tournament on Monday. Ranieli had 14 of her points and Karp 10 of hers in the second half, when the Lady Patriots outscored Wyoming Area, 35-10, to break open a two-point halftime lead. Abby Sterba’s six points led the Lady Warriors. As we close 2024, we remember some of those we lost who left a lasting impact on our community. Ruth Teschener, Jan. 6: The 1970 Wilkes graduate dedicated herself to education. She worked for the Dallas School District for 27 years, first as an elementary school teacher and eventually became the principal of Dallas Elementary School and Westmoreland Elementary School. Georgia Savokinas, Jan. 8: The Pittston native along with her husband owned Savo’s Pizza for more than 50 years and was part owner of the popular Staircase Lounge. The Mayrutz Run will kick off the Friedman JCC Hanukkah festivities, with runners lighting the way from Wilkes-Barre to Kingston. Following the run, the community will gather for a festive Hanukkah celebration, complete with a menorah lighting ceremony, singing, hot chocolate and treats. Local community members will have the honor of lighting the menorah, and the evening will be filled with joyous music, including a special performance by the talented Chabad girls from Scranton, who will lead you in Hanukkah songs.
