Small hands learn to build birdhouses

Students at the Wonder Garden preschool – located on the lower level of Needham’s Merritt Center – recently enjoyed a hands-on building activity, courtesy of Charles River’s facilities staff.

With birdhouse kits designed for young children, Maintenance Director Cliff Hamel and Director of Facilities Jim Piatelli guided the 16 students as they each assembled a birdhouse. Cliff and Jim also brought paint and stickers, so each child could create a welcoming home fit for, well, a bird.

“The children always love seeing the maintenance staff fix things, because they learn how things work,” said Wonder Garden Director Jean Lorence. “The day they visited, Cliff and Jim went around the class and helped the children as they built and decorated the birdhouses.

“The children loved the activity, and our parents were touched by Cliff and Jim’s kindness. It was a wonderful experience, and we’re so grateful for the home we’ve found at Charles River.”
