I’m excited to unveil the Chairish 2022 Home Furnishings Resale Report, our second annual deep dive into the state of recommerce in the home industry.
The past two and a half years have dramatically changed the way people shop for furnishings: where they’re shopping, what they’re buying, and how they’re buying it.
While the pandemic accelerated engagement in the home category, supply chain delays and increasing prices due to rising material, labor, and transportation costs have frustrated customers and threaten to dampen their interest in the category.
In this context, vintage has emerged as a compelling and increasingly mainstream alternative.
Vintage items aren't subject to rising prices or material and production delays; they already exist, so they are ready to be shipped or are available for quick local pickup.
The one-of-a-kind nature of vintage pieces counters the big box blandness of widely available newly made goods.
The environmental benefits of recommerce are undeniable, as this report will show. With over 661,660 items sold since we started the company, Chairish continues to be an essential part of the circular economy and the leader in our field.

While books, fashion, and electronics have traditionally been the most popular resale categories, Americans have now embraced and greatly increased their spending on pre-owned home furnishings, due in part to the long lead times, supply chain challenges, and rising costs affecting newly made furniture.
Since 2015, U.S. home furnishings spending has increased by 34.7%; in contrast, resale U.S. home furnishings grew an impressive 62.6% over the same period.2
Resale Home Furnishings Will Grow 29% And Reach $22B By 2027
In the next five years, the home furnishings resale segment will be 29% larger than it was at the height of the explosive growth of 2021. In fact, this growth rate will be 3x as fast as traditional retail.

The resale market shows no signs of slowing down, with even more growth expected this year. Past concerns about buying secondhand have mostly evaporated, with 97% of shoppers saying there is no stigma associated with buying resale furniture.1 No longer a niche hobby, shopping vintage has become mainstream.

Prices for all household furnishings jumped 10.2% year over year according to the consumer price index.1
Within the furniture and bedding category, newly made living room, kitchen, and dining room furniture in particular have seen prices swell, with an unadjusted increase of 15.4% from June 2021 to June 2022.1

Though prices for home goods have increased at a significantly faster rate than inflation, vintage items aren’t subject to the same economic forces. The asking/ listing prices of Chairish goods have remained relatively flat.

Today, only 8.6% of the global economy is circular, and more than 90% of the resources used and consumed are not reused.5

Methodology & Sources
Methodology
Chairish’s annual Resale Report contains research and data from Global Data, a third-party analytics firm. Global Data’s assessment of the secondhand market is determined through individual retailers, official government data, industry data, and other sources. These inputs are used by analysts to model and calculate market sizes, channel sizes, and market shares. Additionally, GlobalData conducted a survey in April + May 2022 of 2,500 American adults over 18, asking specific questions about their behaviors and preferences for resale home furnishings.
