In March of 2017 The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced Cayuga County as a designated Clean Energy Community, recognizing its leadership in reducing energy use, cutting costs and driving clean energy in its communities. This designation is supported by the Central NY Rising initiative which is the overall regional plan designed to attract a talented workforce, grow business and drive innovation.
Cayuga County has a long history of clean energy leadership with the adoption of a Comprehensive Sustainability Energy and Development Plan; the installation of geothermal systems at Memorial City Hall, Auburn Police and Fire Station; and the establishment of the Cayuga County Public Utility Services Agency.
In 2018 NYSERDA awarded Cayuga County $250,000, with no local cost share, to complete additional clean energy projects. These projects include bringing two electric vehicles and electric charging stations into the county fleet, an LED lighting program, and continuing the development of the Cayuga County Public Utility Service Agency (CCPUSA).
In order to support Cayuga County’s clean energy goals the County has implemented a benchmarking program to track energy use in numerous County buildings.
