Since it was released in 2010, How to Train Your Dragon has been at the top of my list of my favorite movies of all time. From the animation, voice performances, and breathtaking score, to me it is a perfect film.
How to Train Your Dragon tells the story of Hiccup, a teen who wishes to become a dragon slayer like the other Vikings in his village. However, when he encounters a rare Night Fury dragon, everything changes when he's unable to kill it. Soon, Hiccup and this dragon, Toothless, form an irreplaceable bond that changes everything.
The film was nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score for John Powell at the 2011 Academy Awards. The movie also led to two sequel films, a TV series, and more.
And now, the world of How to Train Your Dragon is expanding even more. In 2023, it was announced that a live-action version of this beloved movie was in the works, and now we have our first official look.
Mason Thames, who is known for starring in The Black Phone and For All Mankind, is playing Hiccup. Jay Baruchel previously voiced the character in the animated trilogy.
The trailer for the new movie puts Mason as Hiccup front and center as we see some incredible moments from the animated movie play out.
For instance, we get the iconic moment when Toothless trusts Hiccup for the first time and lets him pet him. I am simply dying of the cuteness.
Also, this side-by-side of live-action Toothless and animated Toothless has honestly calmed all my reservation about the live-action film because he looks perfect.
We also get a first look at Berk, the mythical Viking village where Hiccup and his friends and family live.
Here's Stoick, aka Hiccup's dad, played by Gerard Butler in the live-action movie vs. his character design in the animated movie, where Butler also voiced the character.
We get our first look at the majestic dragons flying out of the cave.
And a brief glimpse at the arena where Hiccup and his friends train to be dragon hunters.
Although not shown in the trailer, The Last of Us star Nico Parker will play Astrid. America Ferrera notably voiced the role in the animated films.
