March is South Boston‘s time to shine.

Its Irish pubs are racking up business ahead of March 17, when nearly one million people will descend upon the neighborhood to watch the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, one of the most celebrated days of the year in Boston.

Boston was also named the best city to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by WalletHub, who cited the holiday’s food, activities, and traditions as a driving factor behind the top-dog ranking.

Ahead of the upcoming celebration in Southie, we asked readers to tell us about their favorite restaurant in the neighborhood. Readers recommended 14 of the best restaurants and bars. Hunter’s Kitchen and Bar and Rondo’s Sub Shop were the top suggestions from readers. Shout out to Pantry Pizza & Kitchen which received the most reader votes, though it is technically in Dorchester and not South Boston.

SOUTHIE RESTAURANTS

The dishes at Hunter’s was praised by readers as well. Gabriel E. from Malden said that the restaurant has an “uncanny presentation of top-notch cooking,” while Maureen S. from Sandwich recommended dishes like brisket and pulled pork.

Rondo’s, which serves dozens of different sub sandwiches, was lauded by reader Bill from Boston, who said that the spot is “one of the few unpretentious places to eat in South Boston.”

Other eatieries recommended by readers include Seapoint, a classic bar that Mike M. of Canton said feels as if “you are in a time capsule” that transports you to “a much better point of Southie’s history,” and Cannonball Cafe, where one reader recommended the BLT-inspired Big Boi Sandwich.
