Meet Betterment—who we are
Each one of our ETF portfolios is relatively low-cost, globally-diversified, and can be customized to your specific appetite for risk. Let's kick things off with our Core Portfolio, the most popular pick for Betterment investors. Core features a broad collection of stocks and bonds from across the world, with a slight lean towards undervalued US stocks. If you're simply looking for a slice of the market at-large, this portfolio could be for you.\n
We have three varieties of Socially Responsible Investing Portfolios. They offer a way for you to support companies that share your values. There's the Broad Impact Portfolio and two others which lean more toward climate or social issues.\n
Our Innovative Technology Portfolio invests in companies pioneering advances in semiconductors, nanotechnology and more. If you believe the emerging tech of today will drive the market returns of tomorrow, and you're willing to take on a little extra risk, this portfolio is made with you in mind.\n
Our Goldman Sachs Smart Beta Portfolio targets companies with the potential to outperform the broader market in the long term based on certain characteristics, but it also comes with a higher risk of occasional losses.\n
If you're looking to preserve wealth or generate income in retirement, we offer the BlackRock Portfolio. It's built entirely on a diverse set of bonds to help minimize stock market volatility. Pick from one of four options targeting varying levels of income and corresponding risk.\n
Last but not least, if you're an experienced investor looking for more control, a Flexible Portfolio lets you adjust the weights of individual asset classes. We'll rate the diversification and relative risk of your tweaks before making anything final.\n

How I Money: Surabhi
Our goal is to be your guide on your crypto investing journey. For us at Betterment, we are taking a long-term approach and are building diversified portfolios of cryptocurrencies for investors to choose from. Crypto may be the first opportunity that all investors have had to participate in an asset class from its beginning. If you think about angel investing or investing in startups, it's often been limited to a few select investors, but with crypto, the investment opportunities are open to everybody.
\nIf you're comfortable with crypto, at Betterment, we recommend holding 5% or less of your investable assets in crypto alongside your other investments. It gives you a chance to invest in the future, while adding another element of diversification. As we live in an uncertain world, diversification can be an investor's best friend.

I'm Dan Egan, Director of Behavioral Finance here at Betterment. So you might have heard there's a lot going on: inflation going up, interest rates rising, commodity prices spiking, energy prices spiking, and housing affordability going down. A lot of this can seem really concerning and cause anxiety when you start thinking about how it might impact your portfolio.
\nLet's take a step back and see why this might not be as dire as it sounds. First off, interest rates and inflation. Right now we've got low unemployment, but inflation is going up. So the Fed is doing exactly what you would expect, namely trying to cool the economy off a little bit, get inflation back down by increasing the risk free interest rate.
\nThat means savers will have higher interest rates in their cash savings accounts like Cash Reserve. But it would also mean that if you were looking to buy a house, you're going to have to pay a higher rate of interest on the mortgage. That's normal. The big question for first-time investors is, is now the right time
\nIt can feel scary to invest right after a market drawdown. It can also feel scary to invest after the market's been doing great for a while. Unfortunately, there's no easy, perfect time to start investing. Imagine paying the price to go to a concert and then not going.
\nThat's what it's like when you sell after a market drop and you're not there for the rally. Stress decisions are bad decisions. If you're looking at your portfolio and it's making you anxious or stressed, if you're thinking about it a lot, that's not a good place to be. So try and reset your relationship with how often you monitor your portfolio.
\nYou should only be looking at it if you're going to make a decision. One of the big concerns in the room that I want to talk about is inflation. Inflation eats away at your money over time. So if you're thinking about what to do with your money for six months or less.
\nDon't let inflation influence your decision. On the other hand, if you're doing something longer term with your money, say, two years plus, that's when inflation can really start to erode the value of it. So you want to make sure wherever you're putting your money is going to be good for a long term return. Now, if you are strongly motivated to do something during a market drop, there's actually a lot of smart things you can do.
\nFund your safety net to a healthy level. Nothing will help you stress less about market drops than knowing you've created an emergency fund for exactly moments like this. Don't go all or nothing in or out. Reduce your stock allocation a little bit, say 10% to 15% Something to give yourself a little bit of relaxation, but not getting out entirely.
\nMarket drops are a great opportunity to check and see if you should rebalance back into stocks and riskier assets after they've fallen. Another thing you can do is use this as a catalyst to check in on your financial plans and timelines. Start with your goals. Is there anything you need to adjust?
\nAre your priorities reflected in how you're saving and investing? One way to make lemonade out of lemons during a market drop, check for tax loss harvesting opportunities. Or let us do it for you.

I am 23, and I'm a software engineer.
\n[WHAT'S YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY OF MONEY?]
\nI remember always being really excited to get more money, to get more tokens at Chuck E. Cheese. I used to have this tub of tickets. I used to be obsessed with--I still am kind of--stuffed animals.
\n[WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO SAVE?]
\nThe thought of not working someday if I'm being brutally honest.
\nA lot of people my age have the mindset that OK, I graduated and now you're making paychecks, and it's really nice and you have this influx of money. And so what do people do when they get that? They want to expand their lifestyle. I've always thought about it kind of in the inverse. If I set a really good foundation, it will allow me to have more freedom in the future.
\n[DO YOU TALK MONEY WITH FRIENDS?]
\nSome friends yes some friends no. Everybody's relationship with money is so different, and can sometimes be such a sensitive topic. Now also, it's easier to talk to an unbiased party. I had a mentor in college who I still talk to. He was kind of the one who coached me into investing, and then now when it comes to salary and just talking about work and promotions and things like that, I always go to him. It's important to find somebody like that in your life.
\n[WHAT'S THE BEST MONEY YOU'VE EVER SPENT?]
\nHonestly, this water bottle. OK. This is a shameless promotion for this water bottle. It has literally changed my life.
\nBut I think a more general answer is I feel like any trip I go on. I went to Peru with my friends, and we did these crazy hiking excursions and ate the best food and it was so fun and that's like one of my best memories from college, and I love that. So that was some of the best money I've spent.
