Over 140,000 trailer hitch locks recalled for risk of detachment from vehicle

More than 140,000 trailer hitch locks are being recalled due to a loose part that could cause towing vehicles to detach from their loads.

Horizon Global is recalling certain Reese hitch receiver locks produced between Sept. 19, 2019, and June 10, 2024, due to a manufacturing error.

According to the recall notice submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Dec. 23 and published this week, the cap on the receiver lock may lose its retention over time or under certain circumstances, causing the lock to become loose and separate from the pin, according to the notice. This could cause the impacted vehicle to separate from whatever it is hitched to, increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall covers 145,431 units. No accidents or injuries related to this condition have been reported.
