Orphan Lake Trail is a favourite amongst people hiking in the Lake Superior. The trail loops around the lake, and the trail begins a little smoother with less tree roots and is more even. It takes you out to a small lake, and then you keep following the trail and you climb a hill which overlooks Orphan Lake behind you and Lake Superior on the other side.
From here you walk level with the top until an eventual decline. This part of the trail comes out to a rock beach that is quite private....

The trail to the site of the pictographs passes through some interesting geological features; rock chasms, broken boulders and sheer cliffs. The pictographs were created by generations of the Ojibwe people. Hiking this trail at low tide is optimal as you will have an easier time navigating a wider trail at the turnaround point, and the pictographs can only be viewed when the lake is calm.

This is one of the most scenic trails that Northern Ontario has to offer, with four incredible viewpoints. Park signs recommend walking counter-clockwise so if you can’t cross the river, you can turn around without retracing much of the route.
The river crossing may not always be possible, depending on recent weather. The trail is overall very well-marked, with lots of ups and downs and several little stream crossings.
Trail reviews for Agawa Bay
Great trail! Beautiful views, well marked trail.
Difficulty: Moderate
This trail may be short but it sure packs a punch! Steep and rocky. To see the pictographs you have to (very gingerly) walk out onto a sloped rock. Signs warn of people being washed off and I can understand how that could happen very easily.
Agawa Rock Pictographs
Definitely difficult with the big climbs but well worth it. If water is high water crossings can be tricky.
Parking: Permit required, Free, Small lot
Moderate difficulty. Some climbing. Lots of rocks and roots. Several falls make good rest stops. There's no great finale on the extended trail. Just more trail. No bugs and maybe 10 people on this beautiful, sunny, 20°c September 26.
