Whether you're camping or hosting a bonfire in the backyard, it’s hard to beat s’mores as a campfire snack. Even though we love the sweet treat, and giving them all sorts of upgrades, it’s hard to deny that they get messy. S’mores are the perfect mixture of crunchy graham cracker, melty chocolate, and gooey marshmallow, but inevitably that decadent marshmallow goo ends up coating your hands. And when you're camping and don’t have a kitchen sink at your disposal, you’re stuck with the stickiness.

That’s why we were so impressed with this viral s’mores hack on TikTok. Inspired by walking tacos, this creator made walking s’mores.

How to Make Walking S’mores

A traditional, eaten-with-your-hands s’more is assembled with a piece of chocolate and a toasted marshmallow squished between two graham cracker halves. With this riff on classic s'mores, you squeeze a toasted marshmallow into a mini bag of cookies, then sprinkle on a few chocolate chips. Mix up the components with a fork, and eat straight from the bag.

The cookies replace the usual graham cracker. You can use any cookies you like, but be sure to grab the small snack-sized bags you might put in a lunchbox—they’re usually 1.5- to 2-ounce packages. The chocolate chips (or mini chocolate chips, if you have them) take the place of the chocolate bar, and have the benefit of melting quickly and distributing evenly throughout the bag. When you mix the components, the toasted marshmallow binds to the cookies and melts the chocolate chips, ensuring that every bite is flavorful, gooey, and crunchy.

In addition to keeping your hands clean, walking s’mores are amazing because of all the ways you can individualize them.

For the mini cookies, you can use chocolate chip cookies, animal crackers, Oreo minis, Nutter Butter bites (for a salty-sweet addition), or even Teddy Grahams to stay closer to the graham cracker flavor you expect from s’mores. You can use milk chocolate or semisweet chocolate chips, or even substitute peanut butter chips or mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. If you’ve never added fruit to your s’mores, now is definitely the time. I love the sweet, bright taste of strawberries with s’mores, but chopped banana, apple, or a few raspberries will also work well. You could even add a dollop of jam.

Whether you go with classic s’mores or set up the ultimate walking s’mores bar, you’ll still enjoy every gooey delicious bite.
