If you regularly ring the dinner (or fourth meal) bell at Taco Bell, then you know these menu items—as well as your favorite customizations for each—by heart. You probably even have a mental list of discontinued Taco Bell menu items that are gone but not forgotten. RIP, Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos. We miss you, Meximelt. You made life sweeter, Caramel Apple Empanada. Unlike the way the McRib keeps “retiring” only to return again the next year, when Taco Bell dishes are sunsetted, they usually depart from the menu for good. All that changed in October 2022, when the Tex-Mex chain allowed fans to vote online to bring back one discontinued Taco Bell dish. After tabulating the more than 760,000 votes, the Enchirito edged out the Double Decker Taco in a 62 to 38 percent rout. Fans of the Double Decker Taco refused to go quietly into the night, though. The two-layer treat—a beef, lettuce, and cheese hard shell taco tucked inside a refried bean-smeared flour tortilla—is set to have another run on the menu after fans repeatedly raised their voices online. The Double Decker Taco Is Back at Taco Bell The Double Decker originally debuted as a limited-time offering in 1995. In June 2006, it was welcomed into the Bell family as a permanent menu item, but its long run ended in 2019. After coming in second to the Enchirito in the 2022 poll, fans took to social media to alert the Taco Bell that they desired more Double Decker action. Taco Bell heeded fans' demands, bringing the Double Decker Taco back for a limited run last December. Fans were quick to celebrate on social media, commenting, "Should have never been taken away. Thank you for bringing it back!" and "So EXCITED! But come on bring it back PERMANENTLY!" Well, now it's back, but sadly, not permanently (yet!) Taco Bell As of Oct. 10, the Double Decker Taco is officially back on the Taco Bell menu. What's more, it'll run you just $2—a veritable steal in a year of incredible fast food deals. Just like the original iteration, this fan-favorite menu item consists of a crunchy taco shell filled with seasoned beef, shredded lettuce, and Cheddar cheese, all wrapped inside another soft flour tortilla that's been filled with warm refried beans. The Double Decker Taco is not the only throwback menu item making a return to Taco Bell's menu in 2024. Back in August, the chain announced it was testing a Nostalgic Menu with five discontinued menu items from five decades. The menu included the Tostada, Green Burrito, Meximelt, Beef Gordita Supreme, and Caramel Apple Empanada. And rumor has it the Nostalgic Menu may be coming nationwide soon, so keep your fingers crossed. That being said, if you count yourself as one of the Double Decker's loyal fans, don’t sleep on your opportunity to try it. Taco Bell’s Double Decker Tacos are only available at participating U.S. locations until Oct. 30. No need to fret if you miss your window, though. We have a copycat Double Decker Tacos recipe that can be yours regardless anytime, regardless of how Taco Bell decides to reimagine its menu.
