Ingredients

Original recipe (1X) yields 10 servings

  • ¼ cup butter

  • 2 ½ cups confectioners' sugar

  • 2 tablespoons milk, or more as needed

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Heat butter, stirring constantly, in a saucepan over medium-low heat until it browns and becomes very aromatic, 5 to 10 minutes. Whisk confectioners' sugar into butter until dissolved and remove saucepan from heat; stir in milk and vanilla extract.

  2. Beat butter mixture using an electric mixer until frosting is smooth; add more milk if frosting is too thick.

Recipe Tips

When browning the butter, be sure to stir continuously and be very careful to not burn it. If it burns, start over again with new butter.

If you're not using the frosting immediately, cover it with plastic wrap and refrigerate it so it doesn't dry out.
