Whether you call it a sub, a hoagie, or a hero, we all love a good sandwich. There's something about a nice crusty bread, a protein, some veggies, and condiments slapped together and eaten with your hands that makes us all say "yum." No wonder there are so many restaurant chains dedicated to sandwiches, from Subway to Potbelly and everything in between.

One sandwich chain you may have heard more about recently is Jersey Mike's. If you're unfamiliar with this chain, you might be surprised to learn that it has been around since the 1950s. In the seaside town of Point Pleasant, New Jersey, a shop dedicated to the submarine sandwich was fairly unheard of then. Thanks to the prime geographical location of Point Pleasant (near New York City and Philadelphia), people would flock to the shore to play—and also eat. Taking advantage of the town's numerous visitors, the sandwich shop took off, and the rest is history.

Like most chains out there, when you reach a certain level of notoriety and a loyal fanbase, you fall victim to customers creating their own menu items. Taking ingredients you know they have on hand and making a new sandwich is the ultimate homage. Eventually, they become more popular, and then the concept of the "secret menu" is born. And while our internet search uncovered a gold mine of Jersey Mike's secret menu items, a few stood out from the rest as ones we think are worth a try.

3 Jersey Mike's Secret Menu Items You've Never Heard Of

The Surf 'n Turf

We all know that the name "Surf 'n Turf" usually implies steak and seafood. There is a way to take that same concept and turn it into a submarine sandwich. This secret menu item is basically a #9 Club Supreme modification. Once you swap the turkey for tuna, swap the Swiss cheese for provolone, and eliminate the bacon, you have the Surf 'n Turf. You are left with roast beef, tuna, provolone, and veggies. You can also choose whatever toppings you like best to add.

I would have never thought to pair roast beef and tuna, but it surprisingly works in its unique way thanks to that mix of salty and savory flavors. Plus, it’s a whole lot cheaper than ordering a steak with lobster.

The Lumberjack Salad

Given how Jersey Mike’s is known for those monster subs, many might not know the sandwich shop also has salad. Just don’t expect this salad to be anything like the ones you are used to. This version is basically the Club Supreme "sub in a tub." Instead of having turkey, this will come with prosciutto and spicy mustard added to the mix. Of course, lettuce, tomato, and onion are still present, but let’s be clear: this is not a salad. It is a sandwich with no bread.

The R & R

This secret menu item is Jersey Mike’s take on a classic Reuben. Not all locations have pastrami and corned beef, but you can find out by hitting up your local shop and asking for this sandwich by name. If they can make it for you, you’ll be glad they did as it’s packed with pastrami, corned beef, Swiss, and coleslaw, all doused in a Russian dressing.
