Hawaiian Roll French Toast Puffs Are the Best Thing to Happen to Breakfast

Perfection, made even more perfect.

Ah, the simple decadence of Hawaiian Rolls. Flawlessly fluffy when eaten alone, or the tastiest bread base for your best snacking sandwiches ever. There are countless ways to love and devour Hawaiian Rolls, but we just stumbled upon a new twist that's changing the breakfast game: Hawaiian Roll French Toast Puffs.

This idea might sound familiar if you visited IHOP in 2018 when their King's Hawaiian Sweet Bread French Toast graced the menu (if you missed out, here's a copycat recipe to try). But that breakfast dish took a group of four rolls and sliced them in half to make flatter, longer French toast slices. Chef Candace on TikTok has taken a new approach to the concept by leaving the rolls whole, creating thick, fluffy, four-sided French toast puffs that are just begging to be dunked in maple syrup.

We only found one flaw in Chef Candace's recipe: the inside of the bread was still a bit dry. So, to load up the rolls with the maximum amount of flavor and decadence, we decided to stuff them with both whipped cream (the canned kind) and a strawberry-cream-cheese filling. The result was even more heavenly than you can imagine. So, what are you waiting for?

Here's how to make Hawaiian Roll French Toast Puffs

Recipe adapted from Chef Candace

  • 3 large eggs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 (12-roll) package of Hawaiian Rolls
  • ½ cup softened cream cheese
  • ½ cup jam of choice (I used strawberry)
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar
  • Maple syrup, for serving
  1. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk the eggs together until consistent. Add in the milk, vanilla, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Whisk until totally combined.
  2. Heat a buttered skillet over medium heat. Dunk each roll in the egg mixture, making sure to coat all sides. Transfer the rolls to the heated skillet, cooking about 4 at a time. Let the rolls cook on each side for 30-45 seconds, or until golden brown. Remove from the heat and repeat with the remaining rolls.
  3. In a small mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and jam until evenly blended. Transfer to a piping back or a zip-top bag fitted with a piping tip. Insert the tip into the center of the roll and squeeze gently until the filling starts to come back out of the hole. Repeat with each roll.
  4. Dust the finished French toast puffs with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup, if desired. Serve immediately.
