I Tried Adam Sandler’s ‘World’s Greatest Sandwich’ To See if It Lives up to Its Name

When you combine these ingredients, it's hard to go wrong.

In the 2004 heart-warming rom-com “Spanglish,” Adam Sandler played a chef and a compassionate dad trying to juggle it all. In a scene from the movie, he makes an epic, restaurant-worthy sandwich: toasted bread, layered with bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, cheese, and a fried egg. It was simple but perfect. And it looked delicious on-screen. But what about off-screen when made in my humble kitchen? After all the buzz this scene created, I set out to find out for myself if this BLT meets egg and cheese lives up to the hype.

I’m supposed to continue this story by providing the mouth-watering details of Adam Sandler’s “World’s Greatest Sandwich,” but I’ll get to that in a minute. For now, I’d like to begin by letting you know that this sandwich wouldn’t have earned world’s-best status without the man behind the creation, Chef Thomas Keller of French Laundry fame. Chef Keller was on set during filming to help Sandler (and the crew), create the simple yet artfully crafted sandwich and the other dishes that appear in the film. Keller is known for his thoughtfulness and precision when it comes to food and cooking, and even his movie sandwich exemplifies this. It’s the reason he’s so beloved and why his restaurants are always packed.

What Is the 'World's Greatest Sandwich?'

If you want to make the world’s greatest sandwich at home, good news, you can! All of the ingredients are readily available at your local grocery store and for the most part, are relatively affordable. The sandwich begins with toasted bread. It should be country-style or another hearty bread that can be thickly sliced. Once toasted, one slice gets topped with mayonnaise, then tomato slices and a sprinkling of salt (a Keller recommendation to help amplify the tomato flavor). This is followed by a layer of crispy bacon which is topped with a fried egg (cooked in butter, of course) and a layer of butter leaf lettuce. The other slice of toasted bread is topped with cheese and broiled until melted, then added as the final, perfect layer.

My Review of Adam Sandler's 'World's Greatest Sandwich'

Based on what you’ve read already, I think you have a pretty good idea of how I feel about this sandwich. In case you didn’t see where this was going, the sandwich is delicious. From the crunchy bread to the crisp bacon, the runny egg, and the lightly salted tomato, it’s a sandwich that tastes as good as it sounds. I do have one recommendation before you set out to make this for yourself, choose quality ingredients. I used good bakery bread and equally tasty bacon, and I suggest you do the same. It makes this elevated BLT and egg sandwich that much better. Bon appetit!
