Foundation Grant Recipient: Asian Pacific American Dispute Resolution Center | Restorative Justice Peer Mediation Initiative

As our world grows more interconnected and complex, the potential for conflict will only increase, along with the need for creative responses that incorporate diverse viewpoints.

In 2015, the American Arbitration Association-International Centre for Dispute Resolution Foundation® (AAA-ICDR Foundation®) was established by the American Arbitration Association® to fund projects that promote conflict resolution and prevention in communities across the country and around the world. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization with primary funding from the AAA® and its Roster of Arbitrators and Mediators. Its mission aligns with the American Arbitration Association-International Centre for Dispute Resolution® (AAA-ICDR®) which, for nearly a century, has dedicated itself to promoting and improving approaches to alternative dispute resolution.

The AAA-ICDR Foundation would not exist without the generous support of the American Arbitration Association and members of its Roster of Arbitrators and Mediators, which together have provided over $15 million in monetary and in-kind contributions.

“The grant from AAA-ICDR Foundation will be instrumental in supplementing funding to support public safety measures and will aid in decreasing gun violence city-wide as that is at the forefront of the work G-MACC Inc. does. Furthermore, the grant will support services that help to mediate conflicts in an effort to see a decline in gun-related incidents this year."

"The Academy Initiative served as a catalyst for developing a roadmap for our community. it provided a set of resources and a set of processes that you can implement in your own setting and try to make sense of in your own community. Providing that kind of framework is very helpful for any city, and it was for our city in particular."

The Dayton Mediation Response Unit responded to more than 3,200 calls last year that police officers in the past used to handle. The unit has seen a sizable increase in calls this year, which is helping reduce the burden on law enforcement while assisting community members so they can work through conflict.

As part of the OPEN Project Phase 2, RSI developed prototype materials — a webpage, a notice document, an informational video and an interactive guide — to help courts communicate more effectively about online dispute resolution (ODR). To ensure these materials were accessible and user-friendly, we planned a series of user tests to obtain feedback from actual users whose backgrounds resemble those of self-represented litigants.
