Zulu is the language of the Zulu people with about 10 million speakers, the vast majority (over 95%) of whom live in South Africa. Zulu is the most widely spoken home language in South Africa (24% of the population) as well as being understood by over 50% of the population (Ethnologue 2005). It became one of South Africa's eleven official languages in 1994.
According to Ethnologue, it is the second most widely spoken Bantu language after Shona. Like many other Bantu languages, it is written using the Latin alphabet.
Geographical distribution
Zulu migrant populations have taken it to adjacent regions, especially to Zimbabwe, where Zulu is called (Northern) Ndebele.
Xhosa, the predominant language in the Eastern Cape, is often considered mutually intelligible with Zulu.
Maho (2009) lists four dialects, central KwaZulu-Natal Zulu, northern Transvaal Zulu, eastern coastal Qwabe, and western coastal Cele.
History
The Zulu, like Xhosa and other Nguni people, have lived in South Africa for a long time. The Zulu language possesses several click sounds typical of Southern African languages. These click sounds are not found in the rest of Africa. The Nguni people have lived together with other Southern tribes like the San and Khoi.
If you have never heard what the Zulu language sounds like, this is the perfect way to get a "taste" of it. Zulu is one of the official languages of South Africa and is one of the Bantu/ Nguni family of languages. *Please excuse my mistake at the beginning of the video where I said grammar instead of vocabulary. African languages are so interesting in many terms but yet so little research is actually done on them. Hello everybody, my name is Halala and my surname is Shezi. I live in South Africa. I have two brothers, at the moment I am living with dad ehh, my mom lives in the KwaZulu Natal province. There are 9 provinces in South Africa and as I've mentioned my mom lives in one of them. I like speaking and learning about different languages, the language I'm speaking right now is IsiZulu which is part of the Nguni languages. IsiZulu is named after a famous king of the Zulu nation called Shaka Zulu. In South Africa we have eleven official languages. What I like about Zulu is that it has been able to have an influence in other languages in the world, one Zulu word that most of you might recognize is "Fundi". You often hear people refer to a fashion fundi, fundi is from the Zulu word Mfundi (meaning learner or learned one depending on the context). IsiZulu has a lot of clicks, which I think were inherited from our sister language Xhosa (one of the 11 official languages). As I've mentioned before, I live with my dad and he works for the Johannesburg Municipality, I live in Johannesburg and I'm a student at Wits University studying to become a teacher. I studied before to be a speech therapist but that was unsuccessful. I am currently 23 turning 24 soon, wow! I'm getting old. I love animals and I love spending time with my friends a lot. I believe you don't have to only have friends that speak the same language as you or friends that are the same race as you, and for this reason I have diverse friends (White, Chinese, Indian friends). I have friends that speak many different languages because I love languages. I heard about this program from one of my friends, she also loves languages. Her name is Lindie you might have seen some of her videos. Thank you for watching this video, I hope what I've shared will be of help to Wikitongues moving forward in the work you are doing.

Many of the languages spoken by the Nguni people of southern Africa as well as the San people have a range of click sounds.
In this video, Sakhile Dube from St Lucia in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, demonstrates how these click sounds are pronounced in the Zulu language.
He has an epic voice :)

African languages are so interesting in many terms but yet so little research is actually done on them. Today I am trying to shed some light on one of the very important languages of the continent - the Zulu language. With millions of speakers, considerable cultural heritage and unique features it is truly an exciting language to explore!
