Historians still disagree on whether Li Zhilong really intended to kidnap Chiang Kai-shek, whether the incident was plotted by Chiang Kai-shek to accuse the communists, or whether the whole affair was just "the consequence of a series of miscommunications, misunderstandings, faulty telephone connections and personal rivalries among junior staff"– or even whether Li Zhilong was actually the warship’s captain.
Zhongshan is one of a very few cities in China named after a person. It is named after Dr. Sun Yat-sen (1866–1925), who is known in Mandarin as Sun Zhongshan. Sun, the founding father of the Republic of China who is also regarded positively by the People's Republic, was born in Cuiheng village in Nanlang Township of what was then Xiangshan County. In 1925, the year after his death, Xiangshan was renamed Zhongshan in his honor.
Names
Until 1925, Zhongshan was generally known as Xiangshan or Heung-san (Chinese:香山; literally: "Fragrant Mountain"), in reference to the many flowers that grew in the mountains nearby. The city was renamed in honor of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, who had adopted the name Zhongshan. Sun is considered by both the China and the Republic of China to be the "Father of Modern China", and was from Cuiheng village – now part of Nanlang Town in Zhongshan.
Nakayama (disambiguation) (中山), Japanese surname written with the same Chinese characters as "Zhongshan", and the inspiration for Sun Yatsen's choice of nom de guerre
Zhong Shan (中山) (Chinese:中山艦; pinyin:Zhōngshān jiàn), originally named Yung Feng (Chinese:永豐艦; pinyin:Yǒngfēng jiàn), is a Chinesecoastal defense ship built in Japan in 1913 of 830 tons and later renamed in 1925 Chung Shan in honor of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founder of the Republic of China. This ship and other ships of the same class are also frequently classified as gunboats.
Construction
Coastal defense ship Yongfeng (永丰) is the first unit of a total of four Yongfeng-class coastal defense ship ordered by the government of the Qing dynasty in 1910 and was built by Mitsubishi. Under the deal signed between the Qing navy minister Zaixun, his deputy admiral Sa Zhenbing and the Japanese, the first two ships were built by Japan, and the last pair were built by Jiangnan Shipyard in China with technical help from Japan. All four ships differed slight from one another. Due to their small size (less than 1000 tons displacement), these ships are also frequently referred as gunboats.
Zhongshan is a prefecture level city below Guangdong, named after Sun Yat Sen. In the eyes of others, it is a picturesque and economically developed city, but in the eyes of food lovers, it is an important branch of Guangdong cuisine! Explore Zhongshan's heart and soul in Shiqi's colorful old quarter on New Year's Day, when the neighborhood celebrates new beginnings. Zhongshan's oldest neighborhood, Shiqi, blends heritage with modern life to show the city's rich cultural tapestry. On this crisp winter day, the clean air and bright spirits are ideal for exploring the little alleys and discovering their appeal.
The many mom-and-pop shops in Shiqi foster community. Local markets, apparel stores, pharmacies, and liquor stores replace global brands, adding to the neighborhood's identity. These little businesses are Shiqi's heartbeat, delivering goods and a personal touch that modern commercialism sometimes overlooks.
We visit Zhongshan's Sunwen Pedestrian Street, a popular shopping and recreation area. This busy New Year's street captures the holiday's excitement and community. The smell of rotten tofu reminds us of the diversified food scene in this section of town during the festivities.
Our exploration revealed the Breakup Museum, a fascinating facility dedicated to the art and emotion of breaking up. It provides a modern twist to the old quarter's traditional fabric, demonstrating the city's cultural debate.
Seeking traditional desserts, we find a charming restaurant on the Chinchon River. We enjoy ginger milk and fried dough to relax after a day of exploring. This peaceful scene reflects the native lifestyle's modest joys.
We explore quiet passageways to escape the busy major streets. Shiqi's inherent beauty and ordinary life shine in these calm areas. One hidden gem is a chapel with magnificent architecture that contrasts with the metropolitan backdrop. This temple of worship's architectural beauty draws us in, regardless of religion.
The day ends with a local secret barbecue in a quaint alleyway. A colorful place visible from my apartment has long attracted me, and tonight it does not disappoint. We enjoy grilled delights surrounded by diners' banter, a suitable finale to a day of discovery and culinary adventure.

China's Mega Project, The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link Sea Bridge & Tunnel
We return to the world's largest steel girder suspension sea bridge, the Shenzhong Link Bridge and Tunnel Project, today to continue our examination of exceptional engineering. If you thought our West Island trip last summer to see the tunnel's construction was breathtaking, prepare for an even more exhilarating one. Today is my chance to climb the Ling Ding Yang Bridge's highest point. Join me on the catwalk across the bridge's cables with the hardworking people who make it possible. Don't miss this episode's spectacular adventure.
Construction quality and safety are at the center of our journey at the Industrial Training Center for the Shenzhen Link. Psychological decompression, which relaxes workers, and medical experience, fire safety, CPR, and fire extinguisher exercises are available at the center. The VR simulators, including a trap door simulator that gives workers a sense of sudden falls, were one of the most inventive elements.
As morning breaks over the Pearl River Delta, we take a boat excursion to see the Zhongshan Bridge, the tiny sister of this massive edifice. The project's progress since our last visit is evident in the roadway sections now reaching kilometers across the water. QR codes on the girders provide rapid access to segment details, demonstrating the project's transparency and innovation.
The view from the bridge's 270-meter-high pylons is rare. Walking the walkway between the towering pylons and seeing the one-million-ton anchors is a testament to human creativity and engineering prowess.
Beyond the stunning views and architectural feats, this visit highlights the human side of such a gigantic undertaking. The project's commitment to worker well-being is impressive, from air-conditioned rest boxes to battle the heat to the comprehensive living quarters with a fitness center, basketball court, and medical clinic. A resident doctor from Zhongshan Nan Long Hospital prioritizes health and safety, demonstrating a holistic project management approach.
As we complete our day at the Xinjiang Link, I am grateful that I was the only foreigner allowed to climb these heights during construction. This unique opportunity shows the complexities and challenges of producing an engineering marvel. As the project nears completion in 2024, we eagerly anticipate driving the 24 kilometers from junction to Shenzhen airport.
I appreciate your company on this walkabout. Your contribution lets us share these fascinating stories about sophisticated engineering and its makers. Stay tuned for our next adventure, and remember that the trip is as essential as the destination.

I really love this kind of peaceful small cities.
Zhongshan is a prefecture-level city dating back to 1152 in Guangdong province, China.
Zhongshan lies in the south of the Pearl River Delta on the west bank of the Pearl River estuary.
The distance between Guangzhou and Zhongshan is 67 km. The road distance is 79.9 km.
The person considered the founding father of the Republic of China, Dr. Sun Yat-sen, was born locally.
Known in Mandarin as Sun Zhongshan, in the year after Sun's 1925 death the city was re-named after him.
Zhongshan has numerous landmarks dedicated to his memory such as a museum and his former residence and statues around the city in his image.
Zhongshan also has multiple forest parks, some beautiful temples and three towns / villages with natural hot springs.
Zhongshan has a vibrant riverside commercial entertainment and retail area.
The most commonly spoken language in Zhongshan is Cantonese.
