"The President Putin I Used To Know" Is Gone, Says Fmr. Ukrainian President | Amanpour and Company
As President of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko started turning his nation's interests westward, responding to the people’s demands for closer ties with the West. He was elected in the Orange Revolution of 2004, but the victory nearly cost him his life. When Christiane spoke with him in 2005, shortly after his inauguration, he was struggling to recover from a poisoning attack that left him permanently disfigured. Yushchenko believes, even now, that NATO should have welcomed Ukraine to the organization when he asked for membership back in 2008. He joins the show from Ukraine to discuss.

Yushchenko also argued that NATO membership would help solve some of Ukraine's political problems.

STORYLINE
Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko called on Sunday for a serious investigation to determine how he was poisoned by
dioxin, but urged it be conducted after the Dec. 26 presidential runoff election to avoid influencing the results.
Doctors at Vienna's Rudolfiner clinic said tests run over the weekend proved beyond a doubt that it was dioxin poisoning that caused a mystery illness in September that left Yushchenko disfigured and in pain.
Following the discovery of the dioxin, Ukraine's prosecutor general's office said it had reopened the criminal investigation that it closed in November for lack of evidence of poisoning. After returning home to Kiev to resume campaigning, he said such an investigation would uncover the culprits.
"Soon we'll know who did it," Yushchenko told reporters at the airport.
While high concentrations of dioxin remain in his blood, doctors said Yushchenko's organs have not been damaged and he is fit for the campaign trail.
Lawmakers from Yushchenko's party said the clinic's findings confirmed that his opponents wanted to assassinate or disable him rather than take the risk he would defeat Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych in the presidential election.
Kremlin-backed Yanukovych won the initial presidential runoff, but the Supreme Court voided the vote on fraud allegations.

It has been 18 years since the Orange Revolution, the Ukrainian outcry that erupted after the country's presidential election was rigged. The nationwide protests succeeded when the results of the original run-off were annulled, and a revote was ordered. Under intense scrutiny, the second run-off was declared to be "free and fair". The final results showed a clear victory for Viktor Yushchenko. How does Yushchenko recall these events 18 years later, and how does the former president assess the current situation in Europe after Russia's invasion of his homeland?
