Getting Help for Yeast Infections | Duke Health
Vaginal yeast infections are one of the most common problems that affect women. According to Dr. Mark Lachiewicz, a gynecologist at Duke Health, a yeast infection occurs when the balance between healthy bacteria and yeast is disturbed. Common symptoms include vaginal discharge, itching, irritation or pain, redness, and swelling. Over-the-counter products that include anti-fungal medication may provide some relief, however, it’s best to check with your doctor first. See a doctor if this is your first experience with a year infection, if you’re pregnant had sex with a new partner, or if over-the-counter products didn’t work. Your doctor may be able to provide a more effective treatment.

*Garlic is an antifungal treatment that burns vaginal tissues
*Tea tree oil lacks scientific evidence and can cause irritation and allergy
*Yogurt can soothe but is not an antifungal
Treatments for Vaginal Yeast Infection

*Oral medication
*Topical creams or pessary
Both are equally effective for treating Candida albicans which causes approximately 90% of vaginal yeast infections.
Topical over the counter medications to treat vaginal yeast infection are drugs known as azoles such as clotrimazole. Topical creams act locally in the vagina and don't cause nausea that the oral medication can cause. Some women experience burning when applied.
Oral medication is Fluconazole (Diflucan) where 1 dose is usually used for mild to moderate yeast infection. Oral antifungals can interact with other medications and may have other effects on the body systems. Check with your doctor or pharmacist first before taking oral antifungal medications.
How long for Vaginal Yeast Treatment to Work?
Symptoms usually start to ease within 3 days but may take a week to fully resolve.
How to Manage Recurrent Yeast Infection
When antifungal medications are ineffective see your doctor. Symptoms may not be caused by vaginal yeast infection or the yeast may not be treated by regular antifungal medications.
