Xuhui District, is a district of Shanghai. It has a land area of 54.76km² and a population of 982,200 as of 2008.
The Xuhui District is centred on Xujiahui, after which it is named. Xujiahui was historically land owned by Ming dynasty bureaucrat and scientist Xu Guangqi, and later donated to the Roman Catholic Church. Being the core of Catholic Shanghai, the Xuhui District formed, together with neighbouring Luwan District, the former French Concession of Shanghai. Vestiges of the French influence can still be seen in the St. Ignatius Cathedral of Shanghai, Xuhui College, the Xujiahui Observatory, and some remaining boulevards and French-style districts.
Parts of today's Xuhui District were once the premier residential districts of Shanghai. After the revolution, however, the large estates near Xujiahui were turned into factories. In the 1990s, the Shanghai municipal government developed the district as a commercial zone. A once-prominent commercial area in the district was the Xiangyang Crafts and Gifts Market, a haven for souvenirs and intellectual property-infringing products; it was closed on June 30, 2006 by municipal authorities.
Shanghai Xuhui: From industrial 'rust belt' to center for education, art, culture and science
Xuhui District is now a center for education, art, culture and scientific research in Shanghai and boasts important high-tech businesses as well as renowned schools and universities, convenient commercial centers and green, enjoyable riverside parks.
The river bank here was once home to the pier for incoming coal trade and one of Shanghai's major industrial zones, but later fell into the depressing state of a rust belt, before being transformed again into a public cultural and recreational space, with a cluster of galleries, art museum, theatres, restaurants, bars, and is now one of the most attractive destinations for locals and tourists alike.

Dji Spark view of Xujiahui, Xuhui District, Shanghai ~ The Laowai Family
We live in Xujiahui now for almost 4 years now, and we absolutely love this area.
After 5 minutes walk out of our apartment we have Xujiahui metro station on lines 1, 9 and 11 of the Shanghai Metro.
So it's very convenient for us to get around in this wonderful, big city.
We have lots of supermarkets, six major shopping malls and nine large-scale beautiful office towers, so you can never get bored here.

Day 2 in Shanghai ! Another amazing day full of seeing more friends, exploring new places and eating the best ever food.
We woke up as late as we could then headed out to enjoy some nice Shanghai wonton soup and soup dumplings with our friend at a local dumplings restaurant and have to say 10/10.
We then headed down to Nanjing Road and checked out one of the busiest streets in Shanghai and we finally arrived at the Bund.
Lunch was at Hong Kong Plaza for Nanjing cuisine and after exploring Yuyuan Garden and Xuhui District aka the old French neighbourhood, we headed to dinner with more of our friends and enjoyed some nice Xinjiang Lamb Skewers.
Then off to Shanghai Disney Resort on Day 3 !
