The Astonishing Life Of China's Tyrant Empress | Wu Zetian | Absolute History
Since her death 1300 years ago, Wu Zetian has been remembered as a callous tyrant, who brought calamity to China. But now, extraordinary new discoveries are revealing a very different picture of her reign.
As archaeologists investigate hidden tombs, spectacular pagodas, gigantic palaces and priceless treasures from her time, they are uncovering a very different story of China’s female Emperor, her skills and her empire. Wu Zetian’s China was a military, economic and cultural superpower, whose influence stretched from the edge of the Mediterranean to Japan and India. Recent discoveries reveal the wealth and stability of her reign, and point to her skills as a politician and a leader. But they also provide tantalising new evidence of the cruelty and violence at the heart of her regime.

Empress Wu Zetian rose from royal concubine to become the only female ruler in China’s 2,000 years of imperial history. Today she is seen as ruthless, tyrannical and willing to murder her own family to hold onto the throne. However this female leader has suffered from a millennium of bad propaganda. Many of the shocking and devious actions she took to claim and hold power overshadow the good she did for her people.

China's Only Female Emperor You Would Not Want to Mess With
As China's only female emperor, Wu Zetian worked her way up to a position of power and prominence during the Tang Dynasty, establishing a legacy that would last thousands of years. One of history's most successful and controversial rulers, Wu Zetian married two emperors, birthed a couple more, and got rid of anyone that stood in her way. The line between fact and fiction with Wu Zetian is blurry, but stories about her life and rule are fascinating.

History's Worst Mom | The Life & Times of Wu Zetian
Okay, so this is a bit late considering it came out on Overly Sarcastic Productions on Friday, but it's before the 22nd so I guess that counts as early if you think about it. She's been heavily vilified since her death so it can be tricky to separate fact from rumor, but in any case you do not want to mess with her.

Life of Emperess Wu Zeitan's Male concubines
Welcome back to 🤪Crazy Histories🤪
Just like most nations, women had little say in rule-making and governance. But sometimes, a woman like Wu Zetian takes power, and the scale tips over. One of the most iconic female leaders from ancient China, Wu Zetian, broke norms when she sat as the only female emperor that ever ruled the nation. In fact, this happened during the earlier days when women were given little to nothing to say regarding nation-building and were restricted from taking positions that allowed them to exercise some sort of power. History reveals that whenever a woman takes charge of a nation, it is not because she was chosen by the people.

But they also provide tantalising new evidence of the cruelty and violence at the heart of her regime.
With hands-on investigations and access to the treasures of Wu Zetian’s time, this film tries to give a definitive answer to the question: was Emperor Wu an evil tyrant or one of the most successful rulers in all Chinese history?

Empress Wu Zetian rose from royal concubine to become the only female ruler in China’s 2,000 years of imperial history. Today she is seen as ruthless, tyrannical and willing to murder her own family to hold onto the throne. However this female leader has suffered from a millennium of bad propaganda. Many of the shocking and devious actions she took to claim and hold power overshadow the good she did for her people.

Okay, so this is a bit late considering it came out on Overly Sarcastic Productions on Friday, but it's before the 22nd so I guess that counts as early if you think about it. Welcome to the life story of Wu Zetian, a cold-blooded killer queen guaranteed to blow your mind. She's killed rivals, officials, sons, step-sons, grandsons, daughters-in-law, maybe a husband? She's been heavily vilified since her death so it can be tricky to separate fact from rumor, but in any case you do not want to mess with her.
Footnotes:
1:15 This is actually the Mukden Palace in Shenyang, used by the Ming Dynasty. The Daming palace used by the Tang dynasty is unfortunately in ruins, the only reconstructions I could find were of the Tang's forbidden city as a whole, as well as the exterior of the Danfeng Gate.
5:30 You might notice from this picture that there are, in fact, words on it. These were written in the Song and Jin dynasties.
5:32 I have heard alternative explanations for the stele's lack of words. Some say it's because her accomplishments were too grand for words, some say she was so unprecedented that only future generations could begin to approach the subject of her legacy. But personally, it strikes me as akin to damnatio memoriae, though as far as I know she wasn't purged altogether. Here's a smithsonian article supporting that position: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/the-demonization-of-empress-wu-20743091/
