The Benefits & Uses of St. John's Wort | Featuring Shana Lipner Grover
We recently had an opportunity to take a walk in nature with our friend Shana Lipner Grover of Sage Country Herbs, where we had a conversation about St. John’s wort. This amazing, weedy herbal ally loves disturbed soil—so we often see it here in Western Oregon in areas that have been logged, with washes of beautiful yellow flowers shining along hillsides. Although St. John’s wort has been lauded for its uplifting nature in aiding with sadness, that is not its original claim to fame. It is a calming herb with a direct relationship to the nervous system and also helps our bodies to do the hard work of cellular regeneration, so is often used in blends to address discomfort from dental issues, mild cuts and scrapes, and sensitive nerves. It’s also a good ally to have around when we struggle wi...

Other common names for it include Goatweed, Devil’s Scourge, and God’s Wonder Plant – among many others.
The Shrubby St. John's Wort (Hypericum prolificum) is native to the Mid-Atlantic region and eastern half of the United States. It prefers rocky soils, but is clay-tolerant.
The Kalm St. John's Wort (Hypericum kalmianum) is native to the Great Lakes region. It grows to about 3 feet high.
The Golden St. John's Wort 'Sunburst' (Hypericum frondosum) is native to the American south. It grows to about 4 feet high and is more heat-tolerant than other varieties, but it is also more susceptible to root rot when planted in damp soils.

This variety of Saint John's Wort is a low-growing, flowering, evergreen groundcover that attracts pollinators to your garden.
Creeping St. John's Wort - Hypericum calycinum, is a low-growing, spreading perennial plant with bright yellow flowers. It belongs to the Hypericaceae family and is native to parts of Europe and Asia. This plant is often used as ground cover due to its dense and mat-forming growth habit.
In addition to its ornamental value, some species of St. John's Wort, including Hypericum perforatum, are known for their medicinal properties. St. John's Wort has been traditionally used to treat various conditions, though its effectiveness can vary. It has been studied for potential antidepressant properties, but it also interacts with certain medications, so it's important to consult with a healthcare professional before using it for medicinal purposes.
St John's Wort is easy to grow and maintain in a wide range of conditions. It flourishes in almost any average, moist to dry well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. It thrives in well drained, sandy soils in full sun. The plant will bloom less in partial shade. In warm winter climates the plant will be evergreen. It usually dies to the ground or suffers some tip dieback in cold winter climates, but blooms on new growth and comes back nicely each spring. In areas where it does not die in winter, shear or mow plants in late winter or early spring every 2-3 years to renew and induce new growth.
USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 5a-8b
The latest gardening videos from GardenClips feature flowering perennial plants, new plants for the garden, native plants, and pollinator friendly plants. It’s also a good ally to have around when we struggle with the winter month blues because those sunny yellow flowers carry the energetics of uplifting summer days.
