An employee performance appraisal, performance evaluation or performance review as it is sometimes called, is a review by a manager where the employee's work performance is evaluated and strengths and weaknesses are identified, so that the employee knows where improvement is needed. Employee performance Reviews, Appraisals and Evaluations are vital for communication.
Over the years there have been some new types of performance reviews, performance evaluation, or performance appraisals that are being met with success in today's business world. These require that employee performance evaluations, performance reviews or performance appraisals be done not only for raises, promotions, or bonuses, but for an employee's growth and development. These include:
Management by Objectives Review: This method, often called MBO, measures the employee's accomplishments against a clearly established set of objectives. If managers and employees begin the year by working together to list these objectives, the end-of-year performance appraisal, performance review, or performance evaluation can simply compare each goal with its final outcome. This method is simple, clear, and empowers employees in the goal setting process but it disregards non-goal-related success metrics.
Ratings Scale is probably the most common review type. Using this method, a supervisor rates an employee on a numerical scale for a defined set of behaviors, traits, competencies, or completed projects. This method gains points for simplicity and functionality, but it only works well if both managers and employees share the same understanding of each point on the scale.
The 360 Degree Feedback Review is a new kind of employee performance review, performance appraisal, or performance evaluation. It incorporates data from peers, supervisors and even outside parties like customers and suppliers. This broad feedback can provide a multi-dimensional picture of performance that can cancel the influence of bias. The goal is to paint an accurate picture of employee's strengths and weaknesses. Gathering feedback from multiple sources is a great way to ensure employees are rated fairly and accurately
No matter which type of employee performance evaluation, performance review or performance appraisal is used, remember the goal is to foster communication between managers and employees. To make your employee performance reviews, performance appraisal, or performance evaluation as productive as possible, try the following steps
โข Be prepared
โข Lead with the positive
โข Don't be confrontational
โข Keep it Simple
โข Be consistent
โข Make it a two-way conversation
โข Address what's important to the employee
โข Discuss work/life balance
โข Be a good listener
โข Give Feedback Regularly

How to Conduct an Employee Performance Review or Appraisal

An employee performance appraisal, performance evaluation or performance review as it is sometimes called, is a review by a manager where the employee's work performance is evaluated and strengths and weaknesses are identified, so that the employee knows where improvement is needed. Employee performance Reviews, Appraisals and Evaluations are vital for communication.
Over the years there have been some new types of performance reviews, performance evaluation, or performance appraisals that are being met with success in today's business world. These require that employee performance evaluations, performance reviews or performance appraisals be done not only for raises, promotions, or bonuses, but for an employee's growth and development. These include:
Management by Objectives Review: This method, often called MBO, measures the employee's accomplishments against a clearly established set of objectives. If managers and employees begin the year by working together to list these objectives, the end-of-year performance appraisal, performance review, or performance evaluation can simply compare each goal with its final outcome. This method is simple, clear, and empowers employees in the goal setting process but it disregards non-goal-related success metrics.
Ratings Scale is probably the most common review type. Using this method, a supervisor rates an employee on a numerical scale for a defined set of behaviors, traits, competencies, or completed projects. This method gains points for simplicity and functionality, but it only works well if both managers and employees share the same understanding of each point on the scale.
The 360 Degree Feedback Review is a new kind of employee performance review, performance appraisal, or performance evaluation. It incorporates data from peers, supervisors and even outside parties like customers and suppliers. This broad feedback can provide a multi-dimensional picture of performance that can cancel the influence of bias. The goal is to paint an accurate picture of employee's strengths and weaknesses. Gathering feedback from multiple sources is a great way to ensure employees are rated fairly and accurately
No matter which type of employee performance evaluation, performance review or performance appraisal is used, remember the goal is to foster communication between managers and employees. To make your employee performance reviews, performance appraisal, or performance evaluation as productive as possible, try the following steps
โข Be prepared
โข Lead with the positive
โข Don't be confrontational
โข Keep it Simple
โข Be consistent
โข Make it a two-way conversation
โข Address what's important to the employee
โข Discuss work/life balance
โข Be a good listener
โข Give Feedback Regularly

Employee Performance Review - An Easy How-To-Guide
The annual employee performance appraisal doesnโt have to be so hard. This video is a step-by-step guide helping both managers and employees get ready to write, deliver and receive a useful and positive employee performance appraisal.
Most people would rather get a root canal than participate in an annual employee performance appraisal.
The reasons employee performance appraisals are so difficult is simple:
1. Most managers donโt deliver timely and balanced (positive and negative) feedback throughout the year.
2. Many employees donโt ask for regular feedback
3. Too much information is delivered during the annual employee performance appraisal.
4. And as crazy as it sounds, managers and employees havenโt agreed to give and receive regular and candid feedback.
Employee performance appraisals donโt have to be the worst day of the year.
Here are four steps to ensure employee performance appraisals are useful and positive:
1. Managers and employees must agree to give and receive balanced, candid feedback. Donโt assume the agreement to speak honestly is implicit, make it explicit.
2. Managers, be honest and courageous. Donโt rate an employee a five who is really a three. You donโt do anyone any favors. Employees want to know how theyโre really doing, no matter how much the feedback may sting.
3. Managers, focus on three things the employee did well and three things to do more of next year. Any more input is overwhelming.
4. Managers, schedule a second conversation a week after the employee performance appraisal, so employees can think about and process what youโve said and discuss further, if necessary.
The key to being able to speak candidly during an employee performance appraisal is as simple as agreeing that you will do so and then being receptive to whatever is said. And donโt make feedback conversations a one-time event. If you do a rigorous workout after not exercising for a long time, you often canโt move the next day. Feedback conversations arenโt any different. They require practice for both the manager and employee to be comfortable.
