World population: Too many people or too few?
The UN marked World Population Day on July 11, 2023, highlighting the challenges faced by the Earth's 8 billion people. But population growth is actually slowing around the world, creating new economic and social issues. Here is what population decline could mean for the future of the human race. #populationdecline #worldpopulation #populationgrowth

The Truth About Human Population Decline | Jennifer D. Sciubba | TED
With birth rates falling, the worldwide human population is getting older and smaller. According to traditional thinking, this spells a future of labor shortages, bankrupt social security systems and overall economic collapse. Before you panic about the end of life as we know it, political demographer Jennifer D. Sciubba has a thoughtful playbook for managing the new normal – including ideas on the future of work and migration – and a reminder that a resilient future relies on present-day action.

Human Population Through Time (Updated in 2023) #datavisualization
It took most of human history for our population to reach 1 billion—and just over 200 years to reach 8 billion. But growth has begun slowing, as women have fewer babies on average. When will our global population peak? And how can we minimize our impact on Earth’s resources, even as we approach 10 billion?

Countries in the World by Population | World Total Population
Not surprisingly, the largest countries in the world in terms of population are China and India, with both countries now having populations of well over a billion. The United States comes in third with just under 325 million residents. The BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China), generally regarded as the four major emerging economies expected to dominate in the 21st century, are all in the top ten most populous countries, indicating how important the sheer size of their populations is to their economic expansion.

World’s population hits 8 billion, UN says – BBC News
The world's population has hit eight billion, just 11 years after passing the seven-billion milestone, the United Nations has said.
After a big surge in the middle of the 20th Century, population growth is already slowing down.
It could take 15 years to reach nine billion and the UN doesn't expect to reach 10 billion until 2080.
It's hard to calculate the number of people in the world accurately, and the UN admits its sums could be out by a year or two.

The BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China), generally regarded as the four major emerging economies expected to dominate in the 21st century, are all in the top ten most populous countries, indicating how important the sheer size of their populations is to their economic expansion.
However, a number of countries considered by the International Monetary Fund to be developing countries (that is, having not achieved a high degree of industrialization relative to their populations, and where the population typically has a medium to the low standard of living) also have sizeable populations, including Nigeria (over 190 million), Bangladesh (almost 165 million) and Mexico (around 129 million), demonstrating that the issues affecting developing nations span multiple continents.
It is notable that a number of the largest economies in the world have smaller populations, particularly in Europe. The United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Italy are all among the top ten largest economies and all have populations of under 100 million. Their numbers range from 82 million (Germany) to just under 60 million (Italy).
Furthermore, several extremely small countries, such as Monaco, Luxembourg, and the Cayman Islands - all with fewer than a million residents - play a much larger role in the financial world than their population numbers would suggest. In contrast, Canada, which is also a major economic player and one of the largest countries in the world by landmass, has a relatively small population for its size, with around 36.5 million residents.
