World Geodetic System

The World Geodetic System (WGS) is a standard for use in cartography, geodesy, and navigation including by GPS. It comprises a standard coordinate system for the Earth, a standard spheroidal reference surface (the datum or reference ellipsoid) for raw altitude data, and a gravitational equipotential surface (the geoid) that defines the nominal sea level.

The latest revision is WGS 84 (aka WGS 1984, EPSG:4326), established in 1984 and last revised in 2004. Earlier schemes included WGS 72, WGS 66, and WGS 60. WGS 84 is the reference coordinate system used by the Global Positioning System.

Main parameters

The coordinate origin of WGS 84 is meant to be located at the Earth's center of mass; the error is believed to be less than 2 cm.

The WGS 84 meridian of zero longitude is the IERS Reference Meridian, 5.31 arc seconds or 102.5 metres (336.3 ft) east of the Greenwich meridian at the latitude of the Royal Observatory.

The WGS 84 datum surface is an oblate spheroid (ellipsoid) with major (equatorial) radius a = 6378137 m at the equator and flattening f = 1/298.257223563. The polar semi-minor axis b then equals a times (1−f), or 6356752.3142 m.

Geodetic datum

A Geodetic datum or geodetic system is a coordinate system, and a set of reference points, used to locate places on the Earth (or similar objects). An approximate definition of sea level is the datum WGS 84, an ellipsoid, whereas a more accurate definition is Earth Gravitational Model 2008 (EGM2008), using at least 2,159 spherical harmonics. Other datums are defined for other areas or at other times; ED50 was defined in 1950 over Europe and differs from WGS 84 by a few hundred meters depending on where in Europe you look. Mars has no oceans and so no sea level, but at least two martian datums have been used to locate places there.

Datums are used in geodesy, navigation, and surveying by cartographers and satellite navigation systems to translate positions indicated on maps (paper or digital) to their real position on Earth. Each starts with an ellipsoid (stretched sphere), and then defines latitude, longitude and altitude coordinates. One or more locations on the Earth's surface is chosen as an anchor "base-point".

  Are you a Bad Elf Flex user switching between standard and extreme mode? If so, you’re probably collecting coordinates in differing datums and need a way to transform points between them. American users connected to a RTK network via NTRIP for survey grade accuracy will nearly always be collecting points in NAD83(2011), while essentially every other latitude longitude coordinate pair will be in WGS84. How to deal with this? We recommend using the horizontal time displacement tool available from the NGS. Are you a Bad Elf Flex user switching between standard and extreme mode? If so, you’re probably collecting coordinates in differing datums and need a way to transform points between them. American users connected to a RTK network via NTRIP for survey grade accuracy will nearly always be collecting points in NAD83(2011), while essentially every other latitude longitude coordinate pair will be in WGS84. How to deal with this? We recommend using the horizontal time displacement tool available from the NGS. Just convert your coordinates to a .csv file, choose the input and output datum, input the desired epoch years, which is always 2010 for NAD83(2011), and the date of the point collection for WGS84. Calculate the shift, and add the resulting points to your GIS. NGS HTDP tool (Interactive Computation 4 with positions specified multiple points in a file in Lat-Lon-Ht format is a good place to start): https://geodesy.noaa.gov/TOOLS/Htdp/Htdp.shtml NGS NCAT tool (Use for transformations within the NAD83(xxxx) datum realizations to state plane/UTM/different realization etc.): https://geodesy.noaa.gov/NCAT/

Are you a Bad Elf Flex user switching between standard and extreme mode? If so, you’re probably collecting coordinates in differing datums and need a way to transform points between them. American users connected to a RTK network via NTRIP for survey grade accuracy will nearly always be collecting points in NAD83(2011), while essentially every other latitude longitude coordinate pair will be in WGS84. How to deal with this? We recommend using the horizontal time displacement tool available from the NGS. Just convert your coordinates to a .csv file, choose the input and output datum, input the desired epoch years, which is always 2010 for NAD83(2011), and the date of the point collection for WGS84. Calculate the shift, and add the resulting points to your GIS. The latest revision is WGS 84 (aka WGS 1984, EPSG:4326), established in 1984 and last revised in 2004. Earlier schemes included WGS 72, WGS 66, and WGS 60. WGS 84 is the reference coordinate system used by the Global Positioning System.

Main parameters

The coordinate origin of WGS 84 is meant to be located at the Earth's center of mass; the error is believed to be less than 2 cm.

The WGS 84 meridian of zero longitude is the IERS Reference Meridian, 5.31 arc seconds or 102.5 metres (336.3 ft) east of the Greenwich meridian at the latitude of the Royal Observatory.

The WGS 84 datum surface is an oblate spheroid (ellipsoid) with major (equatorial) radius a = 6378137 m at the equator and flattening f = 1/298.257223563. The polar semi-minor axis b then equals a times (1−f), or 6356752.3142 m.
