In England and Wales a workhouse, colloquially known as a spike, was a place where those unable to support themselves were offered accommodation and employment. The earliest known use of the term dates from 1631, in an account by the mayor of Abingdon reporting that "wee haue erected wthn our borough a workehouse to sett poore people to worke".
The origins of the workhouse can be traced to the Poor Law Act of 1388, which attempted to address the labour shortages following the Black Death in England by restricting the movement of labourers, and ultimately led to the state becoming responsible for the support of the poor. But mass unemployment following the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815, the introduction of new technology to replace agricultural workers in particular, and a series of bad harvests, meant that by the early 1830s the established system of poor relief was proving to be unsustainable. The New Poor Law of 1834 attempted to reverse the economic trend by discouraging the provision of relief to anyone who refused to enter a workhouse. Some Poor Law authorities hoped to run workhouses at a profit by utilising the free labour of their inmates, who generally lacked the skills or motivation to compete in the open market. Most were employed on tasks such as breaking stones, crushing bones to produce fertiliser, or picking oakum using a large metal nail known as a spike, perhaps the origin of the workhouse's nickname.
The Victorian Poor Law Act made homelessness and unemployment a case for the workhouse. To avoid starvation the poor had to live and work in these haunting buildings.

19th Century Victorian workhouses were not a fun place to be! Set up as a way to give charity to poor people, they were run more like prisons, with the people inside having to work every second of every day and fed barely enough food to survive. People inside had to get special permission to leave and could be arrested if they didn't! Watch this video for workhouse history for kids!
In the Victorian era, if you were poor and couldn't feed yourself, you ended up in a workhouse. When you entered, all of your worldly belongings were taken from you and you were given a uniform to wear. Families were split up - men in one section, women in another section, and children in a third - and then they would only get to see each other once a week.
Everyone had to work hard in a workhouse - from early morning until late at night, those poor people worked in the fields or factories, lugging rocks, cleaning, weaving, or working the machines. The rationale was that they had to earn their keep, but they were working for a pittance!
Food at the workhouse was limited and repetitive. People mostly survived on gruel and small bits of bread and cheese. They hardly ever had any fruit and you could forget about meat! Many people ended up being sick from malnutrition.
The workhouses were supposed to provide some kind of schooling for the children and in this some workhouses got it right. This was a time when most children didn't go to school at all, so anything was better than nothing! The education most children received was geared towards getting them apprenticeships at shops or working as a servant in rich houses and as such the girls learned to cook, clean, and mend, and the boys learnt crafts.

Brian Cox finds out how his ancestors escaped the shadow of the Victorian workhouse and Felicity Kendal discovers her great-grandmother was forced into the institution by her husband after her affair.
