The district is led by a Superintendent, hired by the seven-member Worcester School Committee. Dr. Melinda Boone has served as Superintendent since July 2009. The district also hired a Chief Academic Officer, Marcos Rodrigues who has led the creation of innovation schools in the city, and has supported the principals in bringing rigor and relevance to all classrooms. Dr. Rodrigues started as a substitute teacher, followed by a stint as a paraprofessional and after earning a Doctorate joined Dr. Boone's leadership team. A notable figure in Boone's administration was Stacey Luster who served as HR Manager for many years. Stacey was one of the highest paid African Americans in the City of Worcester. Luster gave up a job in the Worcester Schools after being hired at Worcester State University. The move was unexplainable given that she received a large pay cut. On October 8, 2015 Dr. Boone gave her notice to resign as head of the Worcester Public Schools effective November 30. She will begin as Superintendent of Norfolk, Virginia December 2015. The move has left a vacancy in Worcester that is expected to be filled by Marcos Rodrigues, South High Principal Maureen Binienda, Mary Meade Montague, or Sheila Harrity who left the district to become a superintendent of a regional school district. It is rumored that this will bring divisions amongst political figures in the city of Worcester. The mayor who is also chair of the school committee wants to fill the vacancy with someone of his choice. He did not consult any other school committee member, and has angered many for his actions.
State school in various countries, including Australia, Canada, Scotland, and the United States; a school funded with tax revenue and administered by a government or governmental agency (in contrast to a private school)
Public school (United Kingdom), a group of around 10% of the fee-charging independent schools in the United Kingdom which are considered especially prestigious
Public school (India), a group of historically elite fee-charging privately owned and managed schools in India
Public university, in some countries, e.g. the United States, any university operated by the state, as opposed to being a private enterprise
In the United Kingdom, a public school is an older, exclusive and expensive fee-paying independentsecondary school, located in England or Wales, which caters primarily for children aged between 13 and 18. Traditionally, public schools were all-male boarding schools, although most now allow day pupils, and many have turned either partially or fully co-educational.
Public schools emerged from charity schools established to educate poor scholars, the term "public" being used to indicate that access to them was not restricted on the basis of religion, occupation, or home location, and that they were subject to public management or control, in contrast to private schools which were run for the personal profit of the proprietors.
Worcester (i/ˈwʊstər/WUUS-tər) is a city and the county town of Worcestershire in the West Midlands of England. Worcester is situated some 17 miles (27km) southwest of the southern suburbs of Birmingham and 23 miles (37km) north of Gloucester, and has an approximate population of 100,000 people.
Worcester (/ˈwʊstər/WUUSS-tər, locally also i/ˈwᵻstə/WISS-tə) is a city and the historic county seat of Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States until Massachusetts disbanded county government in 1998. Named after Worcester, England, as of the 2010 Census the city's population was 181,045, making it the second largest city in New England after Boston.
Worcester is located approximately 40 miles (64km) west of Boston, and 38 miles (61km) east of Springfield. Due to its location in Central Massachusetts, amidst Massachusetts' major metropolitan regions, Worcester is known as the "Heart of the Commonwealth", thus, a heart is the official symbol of the city. However, the heart symbol may also have its provenance in lore that Valentine's Day cards were invented in the city.
Worcester was considered its own region for centuries; however, with the encroachment of Boston's suburbs in the 1970s after the construction of Interstate 495 and Interstate 290, it now marks the western periphery of the Boston-Worcester-Providence (MA-RI-NH) U.S. Census Combined Statistical Area (CSA), or Greater Boston. The city features many examples of Victorian-eramill architecture.
