Spending a day in Worcester? Watch this video to see some of the best things to do in this pretty English cathedral city, including: the best places to eat and drink, Worcester Cathedral (obviously!), Edward Elgar's statue, the River Severn and "Fish Pass".
We started our day with the drive from Birmingham to Worcester (Worcestershire), which took us 45 minutes or so. We parked in the Cattle Market Car Park and paid on our phone for our stay.
We then made our way to Wayland's Yard, where Hannah's friend, Ione, works, for a delicious brunch and some coffees to kickstart our day. If your looking for a cafe to drink and eat at in Worcester, THIS is the place!
After fuelling up we visited a lot of the charity shops about town and made just one purchase (which might be a record for us!). We then made our way to the market and checked out the statue of famous English composer, Edward Elgar, who grew up in Worcester in the 19th century. After looking through the window of a beautiful antiques shop we were right next to Worcester Cathedral just as it started to rain - perfect timing! We paid the suggested donation and wandered around, spending some time in the 11th-century Norman crypt.
When the weather had cleared, we headed back out for a walk along the River Severn, where we saw some rowers, a flamingo, and had views of the Malvern Hills. We then made our way past the weir and "Fish Pass", a feat of engineering to enable the fish to swim back upstream.
We ended our day in Worcester in Impasto with some drinks, tasty Nduja pate and then pizzas! Highly recommended!

As time progressed, the village's name underwent a transformation, appearing as "Abbedslegh" in the Pipe Rolls of Worcestershire around the year 1260. Interestingly, this altered spelling may carry a different connotation altogether. It is possible that it resulted from a mere clerical error, or it could indicate that the village had become part of a monasterial holding during a period of rapid expansion for monastic estates.
While the surname Abberley is primarily associated with the Worcester area, its earliest records can be traced back to the bustling city of London. Notable examples include Dorothy Abberley, who exchanged vows with Solomon Easton at the esteemed St Lawrence Jewry Church in London on June 3rd, 1560. Additionally, Clement Abberley was christened in the picturesque town of Madresfield, Worcester, on November 30th, 1626.
The Abberley surname encapsulates a rich tapestry of history, connecting individuals to the idyllic village of Abberley and its captivating past. It serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of English heritage and the remarkable stories that lie within our ancestral roots.

The surname Assells is a topographical reference indicating that the original bearer lived in close proximity to a hazel tree or grove. The vast movement of people that followed the Norman Conquest of England of 1066 brought the Assells family name to the British Isles. They lived in Devon.
Assells from England was first found in Devon at Halsewell, and the parish was possessed by the family surnamed from it De Halsewell, almost from the period of the Conquest, and it still belongs to their descendant, Colonel Kemeys-Tynte, whose ancestor married the heiress in the XVII. century. They were descended from Halsewell or De Halsewell from Normandy. In turn, the name evolved into the shortened forms including Hazel, Hazell, Hasel, Hasell, Haisell and others and spread throughout ancient Britain. By example, Alured del Hesel was listed in Worcester c. 1182, Gamel Hesel listed in the Pipe Rolls of Lincolnshire in 1203, and Hugh de Hesill in the Assize Rolls of Yorkshire in 1204....
