Woolwich Common is an area of military land located to the south of the town centre of Woolwich in southeast London, England.
It is bounded to the south side by the A207 Shooter's Hill Road, and to the east by Academy Road (part of the A205 South Circular road) that the former Royal Military Academy fronts. Situated to the west is the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The attractive Rotunda building on Green Hill to the north used to hold many artillery pieces now displayed at Firepower. The octagonal building, designed by John Nash, began life as a display space in St. James's Park during the peace celebrations there in 1814 and was re-erected in Woolwich between 1819 and 1822.
It is still possible to see soldiers from the nearby Royal Artillery Barracks (situated at the northern edge of the Common) training there occasionally. Formerly, the common was used extensively by the Royal Artillery as a training area, as the common is also close to the former gun foundries in the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich.
Woolwich (/ˈwʊlɪtʃ/ or /ˈwʊlɪdʒ/) is a historic town as well as an area of south east London within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Woolwich became part of the London metropolitan area in the mid 19th century, although remaining part of Kent until 1889. In 1965, most of the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich became part of Greenwich Borough, of which it is the administrative centre.
Throughout the 18th, 19th and most of the 20th century, Woolwich was an important military and industrial town. It is a river crossing point, with the Woolwich Ferry and the Woolwich foot tunnel crossing to North Woolwich.
Woolwich is identified in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres in Greater London, with a potential to become a metropolitan centre.
History
Toponymy and early history
Woolwich has been inhabited since at least the Iron Age. Remains of a probably Celtic oppidum, in the late Roman period re-used as a fort, were found at the current Waterfront development site between Beresford Street and the Thames.
Called Nequasset after Nequasset lake by AbenakiIndians, it was first settled in 1638 by Edward Bateman and John Brown. They would purchase the land in 1639 from the sachem Mowhotiwormet, commonly known as Chief Robinhood, who lived near Nequasset Falls. At Day's Ferry on the Kennebec River, Richard Hammond operated a fortified trading post. His household of 16, including servants, workmen and stepchildren, conducted a lucrative fur trade with the Indians. But in the first blow of King Philip's War in the area, on the evening of August 13, 1676, warriors ingratiated themselves into the stockaded trading post, then killed the elderly Hammond and his stepson as they returned for the night. Others were either slain and scalped or taken into captivity. Buildings were looted and burned, and the cattle slain.
Woolwich, also known as Woolwich St Mary, was an ancient parish containing the town of Woolwich on the south bank of the Thames and North Woolwich on the north bank. The parish was governed by its vestry from the 16th century to 1852, based in the Church of St Mary until 1842, after which in the purpose-built Woolwich Town Hall. The parish adopted the Public Health Act 1848 and was governed by the Woolwich Local Board of Health from 1852. When the parish became part of the district of the Metropolitan Board of Works in 1855 the local board was treated as if it were an incorporated vestry. It was in the county of Kent until it was transferred to London in 1889. In 1900 it was amalgamated with other parishes to form the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich and had only nominal existence until it was abolished as a civil parish in 1930. Since 1965 it has been split between the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the London Borough of Newham.
Geography
The main part of the parish was a roughly triangular area south of the River Thames, including the town of Woolwich. The boundary with Plumstead to the east was very close to the centre of the town, located approximately where the Woolwich Arsenal station is now. The parish narrowed further south, including Woolwich Common and reaching to Shooter's Hill Road. The western boundary at this point was with Charlton Common in the parish of Charlton. North of the Thames the parish included two nearby sections of land known as North Woolwich. The western part was divided from the eastern section by the parish of East Ham. The eastern section stretched to the River Roding and had a boundary with the parish of Barking. The former area of the parish is now part of the Royal Borough of Greenwich to the south of the River Thames and the London Borough of Newham to the north.

Living in Woolwich Arsenal! Today I thought I'll take you on a little tour of the area where I live, which is Woolwich (Woolwich Arsenal). I didn't think much of it until I decided to film this video, and realised there's more to Woolwich than meets the eye :) I decided to show a positive Woolwich. In this video you'll see the bright side of Woolwich. We focus way too much on negativity, there's plenty of that as it is, so why don't we try to see a bright side of things! Woolwich is a beautiful area, well located right by the bank of river Thames.

Woolwich is a district within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. It's located just over 8 miles from Charing Cross. Up until the 19th century, it was part of Kent. It merged into Greenwich borough in 1965 and remains the administrative centre. Because of the '-wich' part of the name (the Anglo-Saxon term for a settlement full of artisan activity), people believe the name 'Woolwich' means "trading place for wool".
The first ever McDonald's in the United Kingdom was opened in Woolwich in 1974 and is still there. Cheeseburgers were 21p and a quarter pounder was 48p.
Arsenal F.C. (the famous football club) originated from and takes its name and inspired logo design from the area of Woolwich Arsenal.
Since 1308, the free Woolwich Ferry service has carried vehicles and passengers across the River Thames over to North Woolwich on the other side. The Woolwich foot tunnel is a lot less known but it's entrance is currently hidden behind the doomed Waterfront Leisure Centre.
The Thames Barrier was opened in 1984. It was designed to stop London being flooded by abnormal sea levels from the North Sea. They test the barrier a few times a year, but it's slowly loosing its effectiveness for purpose.
Woolwich was an important naval, military and industrial town. After years and years of economic hardship and social deprivation, it's finally turning its fortunes around. Vast regeneration projects have already radically changed its infrastructure and culture and this is just the beginning of things to come.
Woolwich is served by two mainline train stations, a DLR terminal station, Thames Clipper boat sevices and a large variety of bus routes. It's 2 short stops from London City Airport; a 5 minute journey. From December 2018, Woolwich will be connected by the Elizabeth Line of the new Crossrail train service for a faster, direct connection to Central London and Heathrow international airport.
