Wombwell railway station (formerly Wombwell West) serves the Penistone and Hallam lines. Until 1959 it had another station (Wombwell Central) on the Barnsley-Doncaster line that was closed when that line lost its passenger service.
Wombwell was home to two collieries; Wombwell Main and Mitchells Main.
Wombwell is close to the large shopping and leisure facilities of Cortonwood, and also has a number of local business from cafes to travel agents and high street chains like Wilkinson's on High Street.

Disused Railways and Canals of Wombwell Main & Aldham Junctions
We're continuing our journey down the Worsbrough Branch (Freight Only Barnsley avoiding line) on the former electrified Penistone to Wath railway. We left you last time out at the Swaithe Viaduct (https://youtu.be/_RBJ_MGAgak).
After passing under the viaduct, the original alignment of the Worsbrough branch built by the South Yorkshire Railway continued straight on to what is now Aldam Junction. However this was later rerouted to Wombwell Main Junction before curving round to Aldham Junction via an alternative alignment. We'll look at this from above and from old maps.
We will see the site of Wombwell Main Junction and the GCR branch from Woodbourn Road Junction in Sheffield before reaching Aldam Junction where we join the Stairfoot to Wath line. It is near here where we can pick up the...

It is near here where we can pick up the former Dearne & Dove Canal cutting which passes underneath our railway. We'll have a closer look and see remains of the original long disused alignment.
This line only really served freight traffic and was littered with collieries along the way - the majority with the own branch lines. However, the line closed in 1981 when the full Woodhead route was closed. It is now part of the Trans-Pennine Trail. A long distance network of cycle paths.
