Wim Wenders Interview: Painter, Filmmaker, Photographer | Louisiana Channel
“The world was such a better world in paintings than in reality.” Growing up in post-war Düsseldorf, it was through paintings that German filmmaker Wim Wenders initially discovered the possibility of a different world. This would later come to define him not only as a painter, but also as a filmmaker and photographer, as he shares with us in this personal interview.
A painter at heart, Wenders initially regarded film and photography as a simple way to record his surroundings and the camera as an extension of his painting tools. What he discovered, however, was that the camera could depict something that paintings could not - time. To Wenders, each photograph is a sort of time capsule, frozen in time but with an incredible relation to its own past and future, inviting the spectator to se...

Perfect Days: Wim Wenders & Koji Yakusho on That INCREDIBLE Final Shot
Public toilets may not seem like a feature film-worthy topic. To Oscar-nominated filmmaker Wim Wenders, however, the inspiration from The Tokyo Toilet project in a post-pandemic world sparked an idea that would go on to become the critically acclaimed and Oscar nominated movie Perfect Days starring Kōji Yakusho. In celebration of the film's Best International Feature nomination, Wenders and Yakusho joined us for an FYC screening and Q&A at Landmark Theatres in Los Angeles where Collider's Perri Nemiroff sat down with the duo to discuss their experience turning the original pitch of making four or five short films about public toilets in Tokyo into a deeply moving and widely beloved Oscar nominated feature film.

Wim Wenders on Wings of Desire | BFI Q&A
The acclaimed director joins us to discuss his timeless and poetic masterpiece.
In Berlin angels silently watch the everyday lives of the city's inhabitants and listen in to their thoughts. Unseen, except by children, they cannot intervene in what's happening beyond offering a comforting presence to lonely and unhappy people. Damiel, one of the angels, finds himself increasingly drawn to one such woman, a trapeze artist with nothing to live for, and he becomes tempted to shed his immortality – a move that would allow him to function as a human and finally meet her face to face.
With the angel's viewpoint presented in a sepia style monochrome and a bold colour used for the humans, Wings of Desire is an outstanding, lyrical piece of work full of symbolism and humanity in every frame.

To Wenders, each photograph is a sort of time capsule, frozen in time but with an incredible relation to its own past and future, inviting the spectator to see more than any film could ever show. His desire is for the picture to not only convey a story about itself, but also about the person who took it. “I’m looking strictly for what I can learn about us”, he emphasizes.
Common for Wenders’ approach to both film and photography, is the starting point in painting and in particular the concept of frames. He considers the frame to be the defining factor - if it is not in the frame, then it is out: “The frame is the main act.”
In the end, Wenders became a filmmaker almost without being aware of it, and the transition from painting to photography and films was complete, as he puts it: “Eventually I realized I was no longer a painter.”
Wim Wenders (born Ernst Wilhelm Wenders in 1945) is the director behind movies such as ‘Paris, Texas’, the story of a man who returns to retrieve his life after a four year absence, ‘Wings of Desire’ (‘Der Himmel über Berlin’), which features an angel who falls in love with a mortal and thus wishes to become human, ‘Faraway, So Close!’ (‘In weiter Ferne so nah’), where a group of angels again look longingly upon the life of humans, ‘Buena Vista Social Club’, which documents a group of talented aging Cuban musicians, and ‘Pina’, a tribute to the late German choreographer, Pina Bausch. He has received a multitude of international awards, including the Palme d’Or, the BAFTA and the Golden Lion. Since 1996 he has been the president of the European Film Academy in Berlin. Apart from being a highly praised filmmaker, Wenders is also an acclaimed playwright, photographer and author.

Yakusho leads Perfect Days as Hirayama, a man who enjoys a simple, peaceful routine of watering his plants, painstakingly choosing the perfect tunes for his morning drive to work, reading books, and cleaning the public toilets of Tokyo. As much as Perfect Days is a celebration of the quiet moments in life, Hirayama's untold backstory and the circumstances that led to his meticulously cultivated life run much deeper.
Watch the full Q&A to learn what struck Wenders most about that original pitch, how Kōji Yakusho became attached to the project, why they filmed most of the movie like a documentary, and then some.

Louisiana - The US Explained
Among the swamps and bayous, marshes and forests, that sit at the mouth of one of the largest river systems on earth, sits a state unlike any other. It’s a cultural melting pot, sitting in the Deep South, home to one of the largest Black populations in the country, and more culturally connected to and shaped by France than any other state in the US. Its culture, history, geography, and society is vastly different from anywhere else in the country, and a world away from even its neighbors, it occupies an outsized role in the American imagination. Ten Commandments MUST be displayed in Louisiana schools
Starting Jan. 1, 2025, all public elementary, secondary and post-education schools in Louisiana must display the Ten Commandments in every classroom.
Critics vowed to challenge the law in court, calling it unconstitutional and warning that it will lead to religious coercion of students.
“The First Amendment promises that we all get to decide for ourselves what religious beliefs, if any, to hold and practice, without pressure from the government,” the Louisiana chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, the Freedom From Religion Foundation and other groups said in a joint statement Wednesday. “Politicians have no business imposing their preferred religious doctrine on students and families in public schools.”

Steps -
Soak dried beans overnight or use drained canned beans.
Chop onions, celery, bell peppers, and andouille sausage.
In a medium-high pan, cook the sausage for 4-5 minutes or until seared and browned.
Remove the seared sausage from the pan and sauté onions and garlic in the same pan until fragrant with butter. Add the bell peppers and celery, and cook until they soften.
Add flour and cook until the flour is gone. Season and mix until well combined. Reintroduce the andouille sausage and add chicken broth with bay leaves.
Bring the pan to a boil, then add the beans and, if desired, smoked turkey. Reduce the heat to low and cook for 2 hours and 10 minutes, or until the beans and turkey are tender and the liquid thickens into a rich sauce. If the mixture becomes too thick, add more water or broth. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. Garnish with parsley and green onions, and serve with rice for a complete meal!
Tip - For a creamier texture, mash some of the beans against the side of the pot using the back of a spoon.

Does everyone in Louisiana drink all the time?

And does EVERYONE in Louisiana have a laissez faire attitude?
We’ll go over those tidbits, plus a whole lot more! So all yall grab a daiquiri and some crawdaddies, we’re going to unbox the state of Louisiana.

They love their crawfish here. Just like they love nature and their culture.
But Louisiana is much more than swampy crawfish stew. It’s actually a REALLY super diverse state, with lots of tough folks and there’s some real issues, too. It’s kind of like a foreign country within the United States. In order to really get to know the state of Louisiana, we have to look at the whole state and explore each and every area.
This is Louisiana. Now as you can see there’s a lot of different regions in this state. In fact, this might be the most diverse state when it comes to region by region differences. First off, they don’t use counties here. They’re called parishes. And just about each parish has its own distinct culture, and way of life and even accent. If you moved here, you’d likely be a little overwhelmed with the differences from region to region.
We’re gonna begin up here in Northern Louisiana.

The law requires a context statement to accompany the commandments, positioning the text as “a prominent part of American public education” from the late 17th century through the late 20th century. Schools have to use donated posters or spend donated money, rather than public funds, to purchase the displays.

Starting Jan. 1, 2025, all public elementary, secondary and post-education schools in Louisiana must display the Ten Commandments in every classroom.
Critics vowed to challenge the law in court, calling it unconstitutional and warning that it will lead to religious coercion of students.

state of louisiana shipwreck the maidens
Description:
A general description of the physical features of the dive site
The deteriorating stern of the wreck is at a depth of 25 metres at the base of the north east side of Hunter’s Rock on a sandy/pebble seabed. The bow of the wreck is located approximately 80 metres south east of the stern on the other side of Hunters Rock (see State of Louisiana Bow Section page). Both parts of the wreck can be explored in one dive but given the short tidal window, it is recommended to split this into two separate dives to allow more time on each part of the wreck. However the stern end is a better dive with more to see. The bow is very small and once you have seen it you can return to midships for ascent.

Louisiana Ship Building Company Finds Mystery Message In A Bottle
A mystery unfolded last spring along the bank of Louisiana’s Yazoo river when a salvage diver from Big River Ship Builders found a green bottle. Inside was a weathered piece of paper with a child’s writing. With few clues about who might have sent it, the company's manager, Brad Babb, was on a mission to find the writer through social media. After thousands of views, they received a call from Eric and Melanie Dahl, the parents of the little boy who wrote the letter. Their son and author of the note, Brian, passed away 15 years ago in an accident. Melanie, Eric, and one of their sons, Chris, traveled from Mississippi to Louisiana to meet Brad’s team and share the living memories of Brian.

The unusually low water level in the lower Mississippi River is causing barges to get stuck in mud and sand, disrupting river travel for shippers, recreational boaters and even passengers on a cruise line.
Lack of rainfall has left the Mississippi River approaching record low levels in some areas from Missouri south through Louisiana. The U.S. Coast Guard said at least eight "groundings" of barges have been reported, despite low-water restrictions on barge loads.
Officials cleared dozens of barges from a river channel near Lake Providence, Louisiana, and dredged it after a groundling occurred, halting river traffic in both directions for days. To keep river traffic flowing, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been dredging the Mississippi at several spots and placed limits on the number of barges each tow can move.

Both parts of the wreck can be explored in one dive but given the short tidal window, it is recommended to split this into two separate dives to allow more time on each part of the wreck. However the stern end is a better dive with more to see. The bow is very small and once you have seen it you can return to midships for ascent.
