Raid, Murder and RetributionThe Destruction of the Weldon Railroad-1864- Presented by George Deutsch
The Weldon Railroad was one of the last important supply lines for Robert E. Lee’s Confederate army besieged around Richmond and Petersburg during the last winter of the Civil War. In December 1864, Union commanders US Grant and George Meade ordered a massive raid of over 20,000 men to destroy the railroad all the way to the North Carolina border. What began as a straightforward military strike by troops (including this region’s 83rd Pa.Volunteers), deteriorated into a vicious foray against the local civilian population, fueled by copious amounts of confiscated whiskey. Weldon NC: "Rocky" Rockfish & Railroads
This small town was once the largest city in North Carolina. It had a canal for shipping goods to Norfolk. Then came the railroads and it became the hub of the early railroad network in the 1840's. The Raleigh and Gaston RR, and then the Wilmington & Weldon RR, which at the time was the longest railroad in the world. When the Civil War ensued, it became the lifeblood of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.

This is episode #1 of a new series dedicated to preserving the history behind our present-day museums. The Wilmington Railroad Museum is one of the last remaining buildings of what used to be the largest employer in Wilmington, North Carolina: The Atlantic Coast Railroad (now CSX). We are joined by Executive Director, Holli Saperstein as she talks about the rise and fall of the railroad and how it led to the museum.
Please consider donating to the Wilmington Railroad Museum as the lockdown has been especially hard on this small non-profit as it continues to be a lively tribute to trains throughout the generations.
