Why move from London to Hertfordshire?
Over the twenty years I’ve worked in the South East property market, I’ve noticed a strong trend in people moving both into and out of London. London’s an amazing city, but there comes a time in many people’s lives when they want a larger place to live, maybe with some outdoor space too. This might be because they want to start a family, or they might just long for the peace and quiet of country life.

Reaction in PM's constituency to Brexit crisis
(5 Sep 2019) Prime Minister Boris Johnson's push for the UK to leave the European Union next month with or without a divorce deal has led to a unprecedented political crisis.
The Prime Minister's proposals lead to several defeats in Parliament this week, with members of his party voting against the government and even his own brother resigning as minister.
In the Prime Minister's own constituency, Uxbridge and Ruislip in west London, opinions appeared deeply divided on each side of the debate.
For long-time conservatives, dissent is unfathomable regardless of Johnson's behavior.
The constituency voted to the leave the EU in the 2016 referendum 57% to 42%, but as negotiations stalled and the challenges of Brexit became more apparent, recent polls suggest support for Remain has risen...

Labour leader Corbyn votes in European elections
(23 May 2019) British opposition and Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn cast his vote on Thursday in the elections to European Parliament.
It marked the first of four days of voting across the 28-nation bloc.
Corbyn was seen entering a polling station in Islington, north London, on Thursday morning.
In the United Kingdom the elections are being highly scrutinised, as the nation is still wrestling with its plans to leave the European Union altogether and the leadership of embattled Prime Minister Theresa May.
Voters across Europe elect a total of 751 lawmakers, although that number is set to drop to 705 when the UK leaves the EU.
The UK has 73 European lawmakers, who would lose their jobs when their country completes its messy divorce from the EU.
The elections, which end Sunday, com...

By-elections: The key moments from the night
The Conservatives saw significant defeats in Selby to Labour, and to the Lib Dems in Somerton and Frome, but were able to win a narrow victory in Uxbridge.
The by-elections were prompted by the resignations of Conservative MPs, but despite the party suggesting it expected to lose all three, Rishi Sunak's party held on to a single victory.

The British Political System: The Parliament
What is the role of a Member of Parliament (MP) in Great Britain? How do MPs balance their allegiance to their party with their duties in their constituencies? What are the core values of the three main political parties in the UK? These questions and many more are addressed by MPs themselves in the two-part film “The British Political System.” In the documentary, Dr. Bob Beatty from the Washburn University Department of Political Science interviews eight members of the British Parliament and travels with three in their constituencies for a unique insight into the workings of the British Political System. Dr. Beatty’s research was partially funded by a grant from the Sweet Sabbatical Program at Washburn University, and the music for the film is performed by jazz artist Jim Beatty. Further ...

By-election: Rishi Sunak visits Uxbridge after Tories survive 5.9% swing to Labour
Rishi Sunak visits Uxbridge with new MP after Tories survive 5.9% swing to Labour
Rishi Sunak has pledged to “double down” on his existing policies to win over voters after suffering two by-election defeats in what were safe Conservative seats.
Labour won in Selby and Ainsty and the Liberal Democrats in Somerton and Frome, both overturning majorities of about 20,000 in what polling experts said spelled “deep electoral trouble” for the Tories.
But the Prime Minister used a slender victory in Boris Johnson’s former seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip to argue that the next general election is not a “done deal”.

Residents comment in Johnson's marginal constituency
(12 Dec 2019) Residents in UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's constituent headed to the polls on Thursday with mixed opinions on the election.
Johnson won only by a slim majority over his Labour rival in Uxbridge and South Ruislip in the 2017, where a heavy tactical voting campaign was launched to oust him this year.
Eric Collins, who voted to remain in the Brexit referendum, said he had decided to "swing over to the leave platform" and vote for the Conservatives to honour the leave result from the referendum.
Meanwhile, Labour voter Rupert Banks, criticised Johnson and said he is "a compulsive liar who is not fit for office."
Standing between Christmas stalls to hand out leaflets, William Tobin stood as an independent parliamentary candidate in the Uxbridge constituency.

Neglected Brexit heartlands key to UK election
(13 Nov 2019) In Hartlepool, a tough, proud port town whipped by bitter North Sea winds, people have long felt ignored by politicians in far-off London.
Not now, in Britain's Brexit-dominated early election.
Britain's political parties are battling to win Hartlepool and places like it: working-class former industrial towns whose voters could hold the key to the prime minister's 10 Downing Street office.
Once, it would have been no contest.
Hartlepool has elected lawmakers from the left-of-center Labour Party for more than half a century.
But in 2016, almost 70% of voters here backed leaving the European Union.
More than three years later, the UK is still an EU member, and loyalty to Labour has been eroded by frustration.

The constituency voted to the leave the EU in the 2016 referendum 57% to 42%, but as negotiations stalled and the challenges of Brexit became more apparent, recent polls suggest support for Remain has risen significantly.
For some conservatives in Uxbridge, the Prime Minister's decision to suspend parliament and expel 21 conservative MPs who voted against the government has shattered their confidence in his ability to find the consensus needed to legislate.
Johnson's do or die attitude towards leaving the EU on October 31 is also galvanizing Remain supporters in the constituency.
David Keys, from the European Movement, has been gathering hundreds of signatures from constituents for a joint letter warming Boris Johnson that he will lose their support in the next election over his decision to suspend Parliament and for pushing a no-deal Brexit.
Johnson, who won his seat with a comfortable margin of 10,000 votes in 2015 saw that halved to around 5,000 votes in the 2017 general election.

The elections, which end Sunday, come as support is surging for populists and nationalists who want to rein in the EU's powers.
Results of the four days of voting will not be officially released until Sunday night.

Further assistance to the film was provided by Professor Richard Yates, Brenda White, Bertie Vickerstaff, Dave Brennan, Judith Smith, Mark Peterson, Stacey Beatty, Sandra Beak, Peter Beak, Cathy Tunnell, Alec Beatty and Keira Beatty. The film was shot on location in London, Cornwall, Rotherham, Sheffield, Wentworth, and North and South Yorkshire.

After living in France for more than 15 years, Tobin was not able to vote in any UK election but according to British electoral law, he could stand as a candidate.
He wanted to highlight his percieved unfairness of the UK voting system, saying that he is standing as a candidate to "raise awareness of we excluded 3 million Brits abroad who can't vote."
This election is seen as a way to resolve the stalemate over Brexit in a parliamentary election that is being seen as the most important since the end of World War II.
The contest pits UK prime minister Boris Johnson, who said he will take Britain out of the EU by January 31 against opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn who promises another referendum on Brexit.

Trawlers still land with holds full of fish, lobster and crab; but the number of boats has fallen, and fishermen rail against the quotas and red tape imposed by the EU's Common Fisheries Policy.
Fisherman Robert Corner, 74, says he will be voting for the Conservative Party on December 12.
"I am voting Conservative for the first time in my life this vote. I hope Boris (Johnson, UK Prime Minister) fetches us out of this friggen EU," he said.
Fellow fisherman Steve Horsley agrees and feels the Labour Party offers "nothing" to people like him.
"l've always been a Labour voter," said Diane Jordan, a hypnotherapist enjoying an evening of music and bingo at the Hartlepool Working Mans Club. "My parents were always Labour: my grandparents were always Labour. Hartlepool's always been Labour and now I'm not going to go Labour."
Jordan is now considering voting for the Conservative Party for the first time.
That's good news for Johnson, who pushed for the December 12 election, more than two years early, in hope of breaking Britain's parliamentary deadlock over Brexit.
If he gets a majority of the 650 House of Commons seats, he will be able to ratify his EU divorce deal – which he withdrew from Parliament last month after lawmakers demanded more time to scrutinize it – and take Britain out of the bloc as scheduled on January 31.
Tom O'Grady, a lecturer in political science at University College London, said the Conservatives need to win seats like Hartlepool to compensate for the likely loss of pro-EU areas in southern England and Scotland.
"They're going to have to gain seats in the north of England and the Midlands from Labour if they're going to win a big majority at this election," he said.
But the Conservatives' challenge is complicated by the insurgent Brexit Party, led by veteran eurosceptic Nigel Farage.
Farage rejects Johnson's deal with the EU because it would keep the UK bound to the bloc's rules until the end of 2020, and possibly longer.
He'd rather leave the EU without an agreement, which would free Britain to strike new trade deals around the world.
It would also, according to most economists, leave the country poorer, by imposing barriers to business with the EU, Britain's biggest trading partner.
Supporters of a "hard Brexit" like Farage dismiss such claims, and accuse both Conservatives and Labour of watering down and delaying Brexit.
Hartlepool, where the Brexit Party controls the town council, is the party's top target in the election.
Richard Tice, the Brexit Party chairman and its candidate for Hartlepool hopes to win over former Labour voters who support Brexit.
Mike Hill, who has been Hartlepool's Labour lawmaker since 2017 and is running for re-election, says he's not worried.
He predicted locals might not warm to Tice, a wealthy property developer from the south of England.
