William Stanton (diplomat)
William A. "Bill" Stanton (traditional Chinese: 司徒文) is a United States career diplomat.
Early life and education
Stanton earned a B.A. magna cum laude from Fordham University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in English literature from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Career
Stanton joined the US State Department in 1978. He was Director of the Office of UN Political Affairs from 1999–2001, Director of the Office of Egyptian and North African Affairs from 2001–2003. In 2003 he was appointed Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Canberra and served as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim (acting Ambassador) from 2005 to 2006 following the departure of Ambassador Tom Schieffer in January 2005.
Stanton left Canberra in 2006 and was appointed Deputy Chief of Mission of US Embassy in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
Most recently, he held the position of the Director of the American Institute in Taiwan, Taipei from August 28, 2009 to August 1, 2012. This position serves as de facto U.S. ambassador to Taiwan because the two countries do not have formal diplomatic ties, a necessity in order for the United States to have formal diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China.

William Stanton (mason)
William Stanton (1639–1705) was an English mason and sculptor. He is known particularly for monumental masonry.
Life
He was son of Edward Stanton, and nephew of the mason Thomas Stanton. Thomas Stanton had set up a business adjacent to St Andrew Holborn in the first half of the seventeenth century.
In 1663 William Stanton became free of the Masons' Company, and was Master of the Company in 1688 and 1689. He worked at Gray's Inn around 1672. In 1686 he became master-mason at Belton House, followed by a commission at Denham Place from 1689; and in 1701 was working at Stonyhurst. Over 30 of his church monuments are recorded.
Edward Stanton was his son.

Taiwan Talks explores what challenges the next president could face with the looming Chinese threat of invasion and as U.S.-China competition intensifies. 小英教育基金會今天（10/11）邀請前AIT處長司徒文博士（Dr. William A. Stanton）以「台灣戰略地位的重要性」（The Strategic Significance of Taiwan）為題演講。小英基金會執行長林全表示，司徒文先生熟悉台灣，同時對國際局勢與區域問題、特別是中東與東北亞，都有深入瞭解，因此特別邀請他針對台灣在區域與全球架構下的戰略地位、以及應該扮演的角色，和大家分享他的看法。
司徒文說，他是台灣的永久居民，也是台灣的朋友。台灣過去40年來，受到中國影響很大，尤其是中國的崛起，讓台灣籠罩在中國的陰影下。台灣是中等強國，GDP排名全球前30，在全球工業供應鏈中有重要地位，是美國第11大貿易夥伴。台灣在政治上從獨裁走向民主轉型，從貧窮走向經濟奇蹟，也是美國打擊走私、犯罪的伙伴，尤其，在地緣政治上，台灣對美國和中國都相當重要。
司徒文指出，中國堅持台灣是中國一部分，主因就是因為台灣的地緣戰略重要性。隨著中國經濟力與軍力的強大，對能源的依賴度大增，而中國的原油和液態天然氣有85％是經由南海來運輸，要確保能源運輸的安全，就要能夠控制相關海域，而台灣則是有效掌控這些海域的重要關鍵。
司徒文強調，台灣直接面對太平洋，若中國能在台灣部署軍力，將可控制太平洋海域，嚴重威脅美國在區域的影響力，而沖繩（日本）也將岌岌可危，對東南亞國家也衝擊甚鉅。中國將回到過去天朝時代，鄰國將如同藩屬國。因此，台灣和南海的戰略地位同等重要，扮演著預防中國向遠洋投射軍力的關鍵角色。
司徒文認為，台灣人民必須體認到，兩岸關係的發展其意涵深遠，不只影響台灣，也影響到整個亞太區域和全世界，因此台灣的未來，是攸關全世界的事，不僅是台灣自己要關心的事。而台灣不僅地緣戰略位置重要，軟實力也同樣重要，尤其台灣是民主政體，也是經濟發達國家，是很多國家的模範，這些因素也都應該受到重視。
司徒文表示，華府的戰略優先考量是希望台灣將自己整合到國際與區域之中。因此，他支持台灣和新加坡、紐西蘭簽署自由貿易協定，台灣能加入更多區域經濟協定，就能減少對中國的經貿依賴。台灣也可以在全球化過程中扮演一定的角色，例如爭取加入TPP。而台灣跨出去也能避免衝突，例如台灣和日本漁權談判及與菲律賓海權爭端，台灣應該透過協調、減少衝突，並強化和其他國家的關係。
針對美國的對中與對台政策，司徒文認為，歐巴馬政府的作法和過去不會有太大差別，但台灣的角色一直都是關鍵議題，華府清楚台灣對美國的戰略利益，也希望保持國際關係的平衡。不過，「維持現狀」是一種模糊的概念，因為現狀不斷在改變，時間則是台灣的困境所在。
至於兩岸是否會走向統一，司徒文表示，美國不會介入，若兩岸人民有共同想法，美國會支持。但統一最大的障礙是，中國並非民主國家，沒有法治、政府運作也不透明，若中國能改變，還有討論空間，但目前不會有太大的改變。

"Taiwan Vice President William Lai recently announced his bid for chair of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Analysts have predicted that if he successfully becomes party chair, Lai could well be the only DPP presidential candidate in 2024. Compared with the DPP, it’s still unclear who will emerge as the opposition Kuomintang (KMT)’s presidential candidate. Taiwan Talks explores what challenges the next president could face with the looming Chinese threat of invasion and as U.S.-China competition intensifies. We take a deep dive into how Taiwan’s next president will need to navigate the years leading up to 2027, when many military analysts say Xi could aim to launch a military attack on the island nation.
In this episode, Lai I-chung, Prospect Foundation President and former Taiwanese diplomat in the U.S. and Japan, and Yen Chen-shen, National Chengchi University Professor of Political Science, who is also an expert in Cross Strait and Taiwan-U.S.-China relations, shares their insights on the pressing challenges that lie ahead for the next Taiwan president, from working with like-minded allies to enhancing Taiwan’s deterrence capabilities to balancing the Taiwan-U.S.-China trilateral relationship. 小英教育基金會今天（10/11）邀請前AIT處長司徒文博士（Dr. William A. Stanton）以「台灣戰略地位的重要性」（The Strategic Significance of Taiwan）為題演講。小英基金會執行長林全表示，司徒文先生熟悉台灣，同時對國際局勢與區域問題、特別是中東與東北亞，都有深入瞭解，因此特別邀請他針對台灣在區域與全球架構下的戰略地位、以及應該扮演的角色，和大家分享他的看法。
司徒文說，他是台灣的永久居民，也是台灣的朋友。台灣過去40年來，受到中國影響很大，尤其是中國的崛起，讓台灣籠罩在中國的陰影下。台灣是中等強國，GDP排名全球前30，在全球工業供應鏈中有重要地位，是美國第11大貿易夥伴。台灣在政治上從獨裁走向民主轉型，從貧窮走向經濟奇蹟，也是美國打擊走私、犯罪的伙伴，尤其，在地緣政治上，台灣對美國和中國都相當重要。
司徒文指出，中國堅持台灣是中國一部分，主因就是因為台灣的地緣戰略重要性。隨著中國經濟力與軍力的強大，對能源的依賴度大增，而中國的原油和液態天然氣有85％是經由南海來運輸，要確保能源運輸的安全，就要能夠控制相關海域，而台灣則是有效掌控這些海域的重要關鍵。
司徒文強調，台灣直接面對太平洋，若中國能在台灣部署軍力，將可控制太平洋海域，嚴重威脅美國在區域的影響力，而沖繩（日本）也將岌岌可危，對東南亞國家也衝擊甚鉅。中國將回到過去天朝時代，鄰國將如同藩屬國。因此，台灣和南海的戰略地位同等重要，扮演著預防中國向遠洋投射軍力的關鍵角色。
司徒文認為，台灣人民必須體認到，兩岸關係的發展其意涵深遠，不只影響台灣，也影響到整個亞太區域和全世界，因此台灣的未來，是攸關全世界的事，不僅是台灣自己要關心的事。而台灣不僅地緣戰略位置重要，軟實力也同樣重要，尤其台灣是民主政體，也是經濟發達國家，是很多國家的模範，這些因素也都應該受到重視。
司徒文表示，華府的戰略優先考量是希望台灣將自己整合到國際與區域之中。因此，他支持台灣和新加坡、紐西蘭簽署自由貿易協定，台灣能加入更多區域經濟協定，就能減少對中國的經貿依賴。台灣也可以在全球化過程中扮演一定的角色，例如爭取加入TPP。而台灣跨出去也能避免衝突，例如台灣和日本漁權談判及與菲律賓海權爭端，台灣應該透過協調、減少衝突，並強化和其他國家的關係。
針對美國的對中與對台政策，司徒文認為，歐巴馬政府的作法和過去不會有太大差別，但台灣的角色一直都是關鍵議題，華府清楚台灣對美國的戰略利益，也希望保持國際關係的平衡。不過，「維持現狀」是一種模糊的概念，因為現狀不斷在改變，時間則是台灣的困境所在。
至於兩岸是否會走向統一，司徒文表示，美國不會介入，若兩岸人民有共同想法，美國會支持。但統一最大的障礙是，中國並非民主國家，沒有法治、政府運作也不透明，若中國能改變，還有討論空間，但目前不會有太大的改變。
