William Mason (24 February 1810 – 22 June 1897) was a New Zealand architect born in Ipswich, England, the son of an architect/builder George Mason and Susan, née Forty. Trained by his father he went to London where he seems to have worked for Thomas Telford (1757–1834). He studied under Peter Nicholson (1765–1844) before eventually working for Edward Blore (1787–1879). In 1831 he married Sarah Nichols, a Berkshire woman apparently fifteen years older than he was. A son was born in the first year of their marriage. In 1836 he returned to Ipswich to practise. Having worked at Lambeth Palace he had attracted the interest of the Bishop of London who now employed him independently designing churches and parsonages. These included three commissions for churches in Essex: St Lawrence, East Donyland; St Botolph, Colchester; and St James, Brightlingsea. The most remarkable of these is St Botolph's (1838) in white brick and Norman style. Apparently Georgian in plan and in its interior it strikes a Medieval note outside. St James (1836), also white brick and in the lancet style and resembling some of Blore's work, is very like St Paul's Church Auckland which Mason built a few years later. Perhaps because of economic hardship, perhaps because of ambition in 1838 the Masons emigrated to New South Wales.
"William Mason" is a 4-4-0steam locomotive currently in operation at the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. It was built for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, carrying that railroad's number 25. The locomotive is named in honor of its builder, William Mason, who built around 754 steam locomotives at his Mason Machine Works firm in Taunton, Massachusetts from 1853 until his death in 1883. The engine is one of the oldest operable example of the American Standard design, and the fourth oldest Baltimore and Ohio locomotive in existence, the oldest being the 0-4-0 no. 2, the "Andrew Jackson" from 1836, second oldest is the no. 8 0-4-0, "John Hancock" built later that same year, and the third being the 0-8-0 no. 57, "Memnon" of 1848 (the preserved "Tom Thumb" and "Lafayette" engines are replicas built by the road for exhibition purposes in 1926 and 1927, respectively). The William Mason is the second oldest operational locomotive in the world, and the oldest in the western hemisphere. Only the Indian locomotive Fairy Queen, built one year prior to the William Mason is older.

Mason Williams - Classical Gas - ORIGINAL STEREO VERSION
This it the ORIGINAL STEREO HIT VERSION of the #2 Billboard Hit instrumental classic from 1968, which is difficult to find online in good quality. (The versions available on iTunes are terrible -- you have to choose between either cheesy re-recordings, a badly overdriven and distorted copy of the original version, or one that sounds like it came from a worn-out tape being played at the wrong speed!)

William Mason - Valse Caprice, Op.17
Mason (1829-1908) was an American composer and pianist and a member of a musical family. His father was composer Lowell Mason, a leading figure in American church music, and his younger brother, Henry Mason,
was a co-founder of the piano manufacturers Mason and Hamlin.
Mason was born in Boston. After a successful debut at the Boston Academy of Music, he went to Europe in 1849; there he was the first American piano student of Franz Liszt and Ignaz Moscheles. He became the leader of a chamber ensemble based in New York that introduced many works of Robert Schumann and other famous Europeans to Americans during the Civil War era and beyond, at a time when classical music still had little specifically American identity.

B&O Steam Days and a Cab Ride on the William Mason (in HD)
On a calm, nice October 13, 2012, Big Jim Video Productions visited the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum, in Baltimore, MD for their annual Steam Days event. Running this day were #25, 4-4-0 "William Mason", the oldest steam locomotive currently operating in the United States, and the St. Elizabeth #4, an 0-4-0 tank engine. The St. Elizabeth pulled hourly trains from the museum down to the Civil War encampment site, where the William Mason was running back and forth along a display track. To make this day even more special, I won a contest online to be able to get a cab ride in the William Mason - the only operating Civil War-era steam engine in the country. Enjoy this rare footage from inside the cab of the Mason, and enjoy the video!

Mason published numerous pedagogical works for the piano student, but is remembered above all for his Chopinesque compositions for piano. The American composer and pianist Edward MacDowell (1860-1908) dedicated his second piano sonata, Op. 50 Sonata Eroica (1895), to William Mason. He died in New York City, aged 79.
This Valse Caprice is a pretty difficult piece to play. It took me quite some time to get this performance going, which still has many errors, but it was more important to me to have good phrasings. I thought a lot about the right tempo and changed dramatically in the course of practicing this piece. In the end I think it shouldn't be too slow and should be very flexible in the middle section. The new layout is only for this video not for all forthcoming videos. The score is on imslp.
