The Philosophy of William James
William James came into the American Philosophical tradition during a time period where it yearned for an intellectual voice which it could call its own. It’s not that there were no other great philosophic minds present at the time of his ascension, but that no other carried within them, so genuinely, the American spirit.
Here we will all but pass over the Psychology which he has been traditionally remember by and take a seat to learn why James is perhaps America’s most influential philosopher.

William James and the Sick Soul
As part of Harvard Divinity School's annual William James Lectures on Religious Experience, Professor John Kaag presented "William James and the Sick Soul." This lecture discussed William James's 1895 lecture entitled "Is Life Worth Living?" It was no theoretical question for James, who had contemplated suicide during an existential crisis as a young man a quarter-century earlier. This lecture showed why the founder of pragmatism and empirical psychology can still speak so directly and profoundly to anyone struggling to make a life worth living.

The Pragmatist Theory of Truth | William James Pragmatism Lecture 6
Sorry about the audio, I'm out of town and using a temporary mic.
A misconception about pragmatism is that it endorses any useful belief as true. Some even say that pragmatism is essentially "what's true is what works." The reality is a bit more complicated.
Pragmatism posits that true beliefs are useful because they've been verified in the world. They help you navigate life because they reflect life through the verification process. For example, understanding what plants are poisonous might be useful for going on a hike.
This, however, doesn't mean that useful ideas are necessarily true. Believing that you have billions of dollars in your bank account might give you a bit of confidence, however, it won't survive a verification process when you go to buy something.

William James, The Psychology of Possibility: His life and contributions to the field of psychology
William James, more than anyone else, was responsible for introducing the wide range of topics that now comprise the broad field of psychology. In his magnificent text, The Principles of Psychology, he explored and expanded what was then known about neuroscience, cognition, emotion, perception, and behavior and left a legacy of inquiry into the workings of human experience that still fuels this social science.
This film presents some of James's most important formulations, including his discussions of habit, consciousness, will, and religious experience with current live-action illustrations. Dr. McDermott's commentary reminds viewers that James's work also prods us to lead our own individual lives with courage, openess to possibilities and awareness to what James referred to as the "frin...

Ultimately, pragmatism views truth as something that happens to an idea through a verification process. It's prone to evolution and progression through further verification, debate, and learning. #philosophy #pragmatism #williamjames

Dr. McDermott's commentary reminds viewers that James's work also prods us to lead our own individual lives with courage, openess to possibilities and awareness to what James referred to as the "fringe" of experience. This fringe includes the hunches, un-expressible feelings, and haunting memories that influence our thoughts and actions.
An interview with a young recovering alcoholic and an account of James's own struggle with suicidal depression make this film an emotionally moving experience as well as an instructional one for students.
