William IX, Duke of Aquitaine
William IX (Occitan: Guilhèm de Peitieus; Guilhem de Poitou French: Guillaume de Poitiers,) (22 October 1071 – 11 February 1127), called the Troubador, was the Duke of Aquitaine and Gascony and Count of Poitou (as William VII) between 1086 and his death. He was also one of the leaders of the Crusade of 1101. Though his political and military achievements have a certain historical importance, he is best known as the earliest troubadour — a vernacular lyric poet in the Occitan language — whose work survived.
Ducal career
William was the son of William VIII of Aquitaine by his third wife, Hildegarde of Burgundy. His birth was a cause of great celebration at the Aquitanian court, but the Church at first considered him illegitimate because of his father's earlier divorces and his parents' consanguinity. This obliged his father to make a pilgrimage to Rome soon after his birth to seek Papal approval of his third marriage and the young William's legitimacy.

Aquitaine
Aquitaine (English /ˈækwᵻteɪn/; French pronunciation: [akitɛn]; Occitan: Aquitània; Basque: Akitania; Spanish: Aquitania), archaic Guyenne/Guienne (Occitan: Guiana) was a traditional region of France, and was a administrative region of France until 1 January 2016. It is now part of the new region Aquitaine-Limousin-Poitou-Charentes. It is situated in the south-western part of Metropolitan France, along the Atlantic Ocean and the Pyrenees mountain range on the border with Spain. It is composed of the five departments of Dordogne, Lot-et-Garonne, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Landes and Gironde. In the Middle Ages Aquitaine was a kingdom and a duchy, whose boundaries fluctuated considerably.
History
Ancient history
There are traces of human settlement by prehistoric peoples, especially in the Périgord, but the earliest attested inhabitants in the south-west were the Aquitani, who were not proper Celtic people, but more akin to the Iberians (see Gallia Aquitania). Although a number of different languages and dialects were in use in the area during ancient times, it is most likely that the prevailing language of Aquitaine during the late pre-historic to Roman period was an early form of the Basque language. This has been demonstrated by various Aquitanian names and words that were recorded by the Romans, and which are currently easily readable as Basque. Whether this Aquitanian language (Proto-Basque) was a remnant of a Vasconic language group that once extended much farther, or whether it was generally limited to the Aquitaine/Basque region is not known. One reason the language of Aquitaine is important is because Basque is the last surviving non-Indo-European language in western Europe and it has had some effect on the languages around it, including Spanish and, to a lesser extent, French.

Aquitaine (train)
The Aquitaine was an express train that linked Bordeaux and Paris, France, between 1971 and about 1990. Operated by the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer français (SNCF), it was a first-class-only Trans Europ Express (TEE) until 1984 and then a two-class Rapide until discontinued, circa 1990.
The train was named after the region of Aquitaine, of which Bordeaux is the capital.

Core route
The Aquitaine's core route was the 584 km (363 mi) long Paris–Bordeaux railway. Initially, the train ran non-stop, but by the time it was discontinued, it had the following stops:
Variation
Starting in late 1984, the Aquitaine's northbound route was extended to start in Hendaye on Mondays only (except holidays). On other operating days, Tuesdays through Fridays, the train still started in Bordeaux. Southbound trips continued to terminate in Bordeaux on Mondays through Thursdays, but on Fridays (except holidays) were extended to Pau, and in autumn 1986 extended farther, to Tarbes (still on Fridays only).

"Se entiende por trovador a todo artista, de entre fines del siglo XI y fines del siglo XIII, capaz de crear la letra y música de sus canciones. El más antiguo del que hay noticia es Guilhem de Peitieu (1071 - 1126), duque de Aquitania, y el último se estima que fue Guiraut Riquier, fallecido en 1292, que entre otros estuvo al servicio de Alfonso X el Sabio. El "trovar" o saber encontrar "sons e motz" (sones y palabras), era una moda que es extendió entre la nobleza de una amplia área geográfica centrada en el mediodía de Francia.
Los géneros por excelencia de la poesía cortés fueron: la "cansó", de argumento amoroso, y el "sirventés" que siempre encierra algún tipo de mensaje agrio o incluso violento. Otros géneros como el "alba", la "pastorela" o la "tensó" fueron menos cultivados.

"Se entiende por trovador a todo artista, de entre fines del siglo XI y fines del siglo XIII, capaz de crear la letra y música de sus canciones. El más antiguo del que hay noticia es Guilhem de Peitieu (1071 - 1126), duque de Aquitania, y el último se estima que fue Guiraut Riquier, fallecido en 1292, que entre otros estuvo al servicio de Alfonso X el Sabio. El "trovar" o saber encontrar "sons e motz" (sones y palabras), era una moda que es extendió entre la nobleza de una amplia área geográfica centrada en el mediodía de Francia.
Los géneros por excelencia de la poesía cortés fueron: la "cansó", de argumento amoroso, y el "sirventés" que siempre encierra algún tipo de mensaje agrio o incluso violento. Otros géneros como el "alba", la "pastorela" o la "tensó" fueron menos cultivados.

A road trip is the best way to discover the diversity of the French region Nouvelle Aquitaine! In this video I will take you to Bordeaux, to the French Pyrenees and to Biarritz at the Atlantic Ocean.
I will show you cool and sustainable activities in these three destinations. I have personally made this trip in only a few days, but if you have more time on your hand, definitely stay longer. There is much more to discover!
Here's what you will see:
Let me show you Bordeaux in a tour with an electric Tuk Tuk, a photo walk through the brutalist quarter Meriadeck and a bicycle tour to all of Bordeaux's street art as well as the artist quarter of Darwin.
Not far from Bordeaux, we will explore the wine castle Chateau du Taillan, where we will even be shown their secrets in the basement.
From there, we will drive to Fabrèges where we will take the ski lift up the mountain for some spectacular views. But not enough, the little train called Petit Train will take us even higher up, almost all the way to the Lac d'Artouste.
Let me show you the cozy village of Arudy before we go on a nerve-wrecking ziplining adventure in Laruns!
Last but definitely not least, we will explore the hip beach town of Biarritz. Follow me while I discover the best photo spots, enjoy some oysters in the old harbour and enjoy the sunset in this beautiful town.

The following song by William IX describes a piquant adventure which he had during his pilgrimage. The ensemble use the melody of the Versus "In laudes innocentium" found in the earliest of the St. Martial manuscripts (ca. 1099).

"Se entiende por trovador a todo artista, de entre fines del siglo XI y fines del siglo XIII, capaz de crear la letra y música de sus canciones. El más antiguo del que hay noticia es Guilhem de Peitieu (1071 - 1126), duque de Aquitania, y el último se estima que fue Guiraut Riquier, fallecido en 1292, que entre otros estuvo al servicio de Alfonso X el Sabio. El "trovar" o saber encontrar "sons e motz" (sones y palabras), era una moda que es extendió entre la nobleza de una amplia área geográfica centrada en el mediodía de Francia.
Los géneros por excelencia de la poesía cortés fueron: la "cansó", de argumento amoroso, y el "sirventés" que siempre encierra algún tipo de mensaje agrio o incluso violento. Otros géneros como el "alba", la "pastorela" o la "tensó" fueron menos cultivados.
Como en el caso de Guilhem de Peitieu, algunos trovadores fueron nobles, pero por lo general solía ser alguien de origen humilde que había tenido la oportunidad de formarse en las escuelas monásticas o catedralicias, entrando luego al servicio de un señor, si no lo estaba ya.
Aunque los cancioneros recogen unos dos mil seiscientos poemas de los trovadores, sólo se copió la música de una décima parte por motivos complejos que tienen mucho que ver con la prioridad absoluta, en este tipo de repertorio, de la letra frente a la melodía, que se limita a subrayar el sentido del verso ya de por sí musical".- (Mari Carmen Gómez).

William IX, Duke of Aquitaine
William IX (Occitan: Guilhèm de Peitieus; Guilhem de Poitou French: Guillaume de Poitiers,) (22 October 1071 – 11 February 1127), called the Troubador, was the Duke of Aquitaine and Gascony and Count of Poitou (as William VII) between 1086 and his death. He was also one of the leaders of the Crusade of 1101. Though his political and military achievements have a certain historical importance, he is best known as the earliest troubadour — a vernacular lyric poet in the Occitan language — whose work survived.
Ducal career
William was the son of William VIII of Aquitaine by his third wife, Hildegarde of Burgundy. His birth was a cause of great celebration at the Aquitanian court, but the Church at first considered him illegitimate because of his father's earlier divorces and his parents' consanguinity. This obliged his father to make a pilgrimage to Rome soon after his birth to seek Papal approval of his third marriage and the young William's legitimacy.

Eleanor of Aquitaine, duchess in her own right and Queen of France at 15. She traded an unhappy marriage to Louis VII for a younger man whom she helped make King Henry II of England. But when their marriage turned sour as well she supported their sons against him in one of the worst family feuds in History.

A road trip is the best way to discover the diversity of the French region Nouvelle Aquitaine! In this video I will take you to Bordeaux, to the French Pyrenees and to Biarritz at the Atlantic Ocean.
I will show you cool and sustainable activities in these three destinations. I have personally made this trip in only a few days, but if you have more time on your hand, definitely stay longer. There is much more to discover!
Here's what you will see:
Let me show you Bordeaux in a tour with an electric Tuk Tuk, a photo walk through the brutalist quarter Meriadeck and a bicycle tour to all of Bordeaux's street art as well as the artist quarter of Darwin.
Not far from Bordeaux, we will explore the wine castle Chateau du Taillan, where we will even be shown their secrets in the basement.
From there, we will drive to Fabrèges where we will take the ski lift up the mountain for some spectacular views. But not enough, the little train called Petit Train will take us even higher up, almost all the way to the Lac d'Artouste.
Let me show you the cozy village of Arudy before we go on a nerve-wrecking ziplining adventure in Laruns!
Last but definitely not least, we will explore the hip beach town of Biarritz. Follow me while I discover the best photo spots, enjoy some oysters in the old harbour and enjoy the sunset in this beautiful town.
