William Dunn Moseley was born on February 1, 1795 at Moseley Hall in Lenoir County, North Carolina, which is a different place than Moseley Hall on the Northeast branch of the Cape Fear created by colonial official Edward Moseley, to whom he was not related. He was the son of Matthew and Elizabeth Herring Dunn Moseley, who built this Moseley Hall. He and his father were distant descendants of William Moseley, the immigrant ancestor, who came to Virginia in 1649 and built Greenwich near Norfolk on the Elizabeth River in what was then Lower Norfolk County. The plantation house was later known as Rolleston Hall.
Moseley graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1818. He was of entirely English ancestry, all of which had been in America since the days of the original thirteen colonies. He received his master's degree from UNC in 1821. While at the university, Moseley was the roommate of future president James K. Polk.
William Dunn (1770–1849) was a Scottish agriculturist, mechanic, and mill owner.
Life
He was born at Gartclash, in the parish of Kirkintilloch, Dumbartonshire, in October 1770, and was educated at the parish school and partly at the neighbouring village of Campsie.
Before he was eighteen he was left an orphan, with four brothers and a sister dependent on him for support. He had already given evidence of possessing an aptitude for mechanical contrivances. His first situation was in the establishment of a cotton-spinner named Waddington, at Stockingfield, near Glasgow. Here he learned iron-turning and machine-making. Three or four years later he was in Messrs. Black & Hastie's works at Bridge of Weir, from which he went to Pollokshaws, to the factories of John Monteith.
About 1800, having acquired a few hundred pounds by the sale of his patrimony of Gartclash, he resolved to start in business for himself, and accordingly opened a manufactory of machines in High John Street, Glasgow. In or about 1802, he bought a small spinning-mill in Tobago Street, Calton of Glasgow, and in 1808 he purchased the Duntocher mill, some seven miles distant from that city. A few years later he purchased from the Faifley Spinning Company the Faifley mill, which stood about a mile distant from the other.
Moseley is a suburb of south Birmingham, England, 3 miles (4.8km) south of the city centre. The area is a popular cosmopolitan residential location and leisure destination, with a number of bars and restaurants. The area also has a number of boutiques and other independent retailers.
Moseley was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Museleie.
St. Mary's Church, Moseley was licensed by the Bishop of Worcester (authorised by Pope Innocent VII) in February 1405, and the 600th anniversary was celebrated in 2005 with a series of special events. In 2012 the church bells which had been named as the worst sounding in the country were replaced. Moseley itself developed around a Victorian shopping area known as Moseley Village.
Moseley Hall was rebuilt in parkland in the late 1700s and rebuilt by 1795 after being set on fire during rioting in 1791. It was donated in 1891 to the City of Birmingham by Richard Cadbury and now forms part of Moseley Hall Hospital.

The Governor's Abandoned Plantation In Florida
We just so happened to stumble across an abandoned plantation home in Southern Florida. As we investigated the neighbors told us the home was once owned by the first governor of Florida named William Dunn Moseley in the 1860s. The surrounding block used to be a massive orange grove but is now a heavily populated residential area. William was well known for supporting the agriculture of his time, and helped conflicts between the white settlers and the Seminole Indians in the 1840s.

William Dunn was trained at San Jose State University and Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, now in Pasadena. He has painted throughout his career and has taught watercolor and graphic design extensively at De Anza and Foothill Colleges in Cupertino and Los Altos Hills, California, and the Community School of Music and Arts in Mountain View, CA. In his mid-career he taught graphic design and was the dept. chairman at the Academy of Art College (now called University) in San Francisco. He has taught private lessons in the Southern California area near San Diego, and most recently in San Mateo and the surrounding Bay Area of Northern California.
William Dunn is heavily influenced by and indebted to many past and present artists, including Winslow Homer, Dong Kingman, John Singer Sargent, Francis Livingston, Dick Cole, Brook Temple, Charles Reid, Joseph Zbukvic, Herman Pekel, John Lovett, and many more. A member of both the American and National Watercolor Societies, William generally paints in a loose style and enjoys painting a variety of subjects.
“For me, painting is about trying to capture the essence of things. Subjects and scenes alike have an innate mood and character. I want the painting to tell the story more than the surface of the scene exposes – more than the viewer expects. I hope to touch that intangible quality with my painting, if I can. Pursuing that feeling is what keeps it interesting for me - and always coming back for more.”
In addition to art, William Dunn enjoys riding his mountain bike, sailing small boats, and is a black belt in Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial art. He has moved back to the San Francisco Bay area, now living in La Honda, California, high in the hills above Santa Clara Valley, and has a son, Garen, who got all the good looks, and is working in the in the marketing field in Los Angeles.
