William Asher: News Report of His Death - July 16, 2012
Legendary Hollywood TV Director, William Asher, has died. He was 90 years old.
William Milton Asher (August 8, 1921 – July 16, 2012) was an American television and film producer, film director, and screenwriter. He was one of the most prolific early television directors, producing or directing over two dozen series.
With television in its infancy, Asher introduced the sitcom Our Miss Brooks, which was adapted from a radio show. He began directing I Love Lucy by 1952. As a result of his early success, Asher was considered an "early wunderkind of TV-land," and was hyperbolically credited in one magazine article with "inventing" the sitcom. In 1964, he began to direct episodes of Bewitched, which starred his wife Elizabeth Montgomery. He produced the series from the fourth season.

Today, April 15th, marks Elizabeth Montgomery's birthdate - born April 15, 1933, and it is pleasure, and privilege, here at Television Vanguard, for us to honor her and this day. She passed away far, far too soon on May 18, 1995.
Bewitched. New Book Confirms Who Elizabeth Montgomery Slept With
Did you know that Elizabeth Montgomery may or may not have had an affair with John F. Kennedy, and that she had bad luck in her romantic life due to her propensity for being unfaithful? Elizabeth Montgomery may have been no stranger to the male gaze thanks to her time playing Samantha Stephens on Bewitched, but most considered her a relatively wholesome figure until a posthumously released tell-all book revealed that she actually led a fairly salacious life. The book contained information that was shared with the author by Elizabeth herself before her death. This information included the many men that the actress had hooked up with over the years, besides her four husbands.

Bewitched. Just one word - that is all that is needed for people to think back fondly to watching television growing up as children during any time of the past 50 years (the show is still shown daily on cable television: Antenna TV - check your local listings) and seeing the lovely Elizabeth as Samantha Stephens, the good witch of Westport Connecticut. Bewitched - Samantha - Elizabeth. The three names have become synonymous with television at its best.
No tribute to television in the 1960s, not a one, can be complete without a significant mention of the impact William Asher and Elizabeth Montgomery (husband and wife) made to television with their ABC hit series Bewitched.
They as a couple, along with Donna Reed and her husband Tony Owen (more on 'Todon' production company in May here at Television Vanguard), created two series that formed the backbone of the ABC television network during the 1960s. As great an impact Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz as a couple made to television in the 1950's (and they made a profound foundational impact to the medium), in many ways, William Asher and Elizabeth Montgomery extended that impact from the mid 1960s into the early 1970s with Bewitched.
With Montgomery in front of the camera, Asher ensured that everything (producer, director, writer, etc.) behind the camera ran like clockwork to ensure his wife and their show was always at its best. And it was. All these years later, the look of that series just sparkles - the details in the set, the clothing, the colors, the words - everything just sparkles. Class.
A follow-up clip on Bewitched will be presented here at Television Vanguard momentarily, but we want to take this moment to give some background on the impact William Asher made to television. His resume as a television director is stunning, and his hand prints are on a remarkable number of television series and specials from the 1950s to the 1980s:
Make Room for Daddy, December Bride, I Love Lucy, The Dinah Shore Chevy Show, The Patty Duke Show, Bewitched, Gidget, The New Temperature's Rising, Alice, The Dukes of Hazzard, Harper Valley P.T.A., I Dream of Jeannie (TV Movie'85), Return to Green Acres (TV Movie'90). An incredible list (for the full list, visit imdb.com) of television talent and nostalgia. Mr. Asher was born on August 8, 1921, and passed away relatively recently on July 19, 2012. He lived a long life, full of accomplishments and talent that we all are the beneficiaries of as we watch television. His impact is still being felt in the medium, decades later. Thank you Bill. Thank you Elizabeth.
Interviewed in this clip tribute of Bewitched and Elizabeth Montgomery includes William Asher (producer and director), actresses from the series, Kasey Rogers and Erin Murphy, and author Herbie Plato. Also interviewed in this DVD special presentation (but not shown here on this clip) is Sol Saks (1910-2011), who was the creator of the Bewitched TV series. Another very talented man (actor, writer, producer), who lived to be 100!... and a very important person who played a key role in the history of television.
Mr. Plato is an expert on both the television series Bewitched and the life and career of Elizabeth Montgomery. He has written two books on the series and Ms. Montgomery that are must reads for any fan:

While Darrin was played by two separate actors over the course of Bewitched’s run, Elizabeth remained on the series for all of its eight seasons. Though Elizabeth became known for playing a loving and faithful wife on the screen, she didn’t always mirror these qualities in her real-life relationships. It was Elizabeth’s third husband, Bill Asher, who had helped her get the role of Samantha on the series. Elizabeth had divorced her second husband in 1963 and married Bill the same year. In 1964, Bewitched premiered.
Although Elizabeth was certainly grateful towards her third husband for helping her secure her iconic role on Bewitched, that didn’t stop her from starting up an extramarital affair with one of the series’ directors later on in the show’s run. Bill Asher was a producer with a lot of Hollywood clout, and he had engaged in numerous extramarital affairs beforehand with all sorts of industry starlets. However, Elizabeth’s affair during the filming of Bewitched was different.
While Bill had cheated on Elizabeth with numerous starlets, he had never fallen in love with any of them. Contrastingly, Elizabeth’s affair during the filming of Bewitched turned out to be the real deal, and Bill couldn’t stand to see his wife in love with another man. Join Facts Verse as we explore how Elizabeth Montgomery destroyed two marriages with her affair during Bewitched.

Elizabeth Montgomery’s father was a famous performer, but he didn’t approve of his daughter following his footsteps into the acting world. Elizabeth loved making her father angry, and this could also be seen in her propensity for choosing suitors that were a good deal older than she was. Elizabeth’s first husband was a wealthy New York City socialite that was a decade older than she was. When he tried to turn the aspiring star into a stay-at-home wife, she fled to California and married Gig Young. The gig was nearly three decades older than she was, and he also loved to drink and abuse her.
Neither of Elizabeth’s first two marriages lasted long, and neither did her third. However, there was something good that came out of Elizabeth’s third marriage, and that was her stardom! Her third husband was television producer Bill Asher, who made her a star when he cast her in Bewitched. Elizabeth repaid him by running off with the show’s director.
Elizabeth and Bill divorced after her infidelity was made clear, though she never married the aforementioned director. That relationship came to an end became of another affair, though Elizabeth eventually settled into a relationship with fellow performer Robert Fox. Produced by Helen Ainsworth, directed by William Asher, and stars Gene Barry, Valerie French, George Voskovec, and Arnold Moss. The screenplay by John Mantley is based on his 1956 original science fiction novel of the same name.
Englishwoman Evelyn Wingate, American reporter Jonathan Clark, Chinese peasant Su Tan, German physicist Klaus Bechner, and Soviet soldier Ivan Godofsky are randomly transported to an alien spacecraft in Earth orbit. There, they are met by a humanoid referring to himself only as "The Alien", who explains that he is the representative of a world orbiting a sun about to go nova. The Alien provides each of the five with sets of three capsules, each set is capable of destroying all human life within a 3,000-mile radius - their expectation is that humanity will use all the capsules, obliterating itself, leaving the Earth for the aliens to populate. The capsules' containers can only be opened by the thought waves of the person to whom they were given. Once out in the open, they can be used by anyone, but only during the next 27 days...
