Archaeological Experiments in the Study of the Textile Economy of the Wielbark Culture
by Magdalena Przymorska-Sztuczka
Archaeological Museum in Biskupin, Poland
In my research work, I focus on understanding the textile economy of the communities inhabiting the territory of today's Poland in the late Bronze Age and the Iron Age. Rarely archaeologists do have the opportunity to study both textile tools and fabrics, which were made with them. In the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age, the custom of cremation of the dead prevailed in most areas of Poland, which is why textiles from this period are rare finds. In addition, textile tools are mainly found in settlements. The situation changes in the Roman period. Part of the Polish lands in this period was inhabited by people associated with the so-called Wielbark culture. They practised both cremation and inhumation funeral ritu...

Genomic History of the Goths

One of them assumes that the homeland of the Goths was located in the southernmost part of the Germanic territories other than in Scandinavia and the other that southern Scandinavia was the homeland of the Goths. Ancient cultures in Europe and Y-DNA Haplogroup I
In the last episode, we investigated the origin of Y-DNA haplogroup I, its subclades, and its current distribution in Europe. In this video, we will map the discovery point of Haplogroup I among the remains of ancient cultures that existed in Europe and the same period.

Scientists Reveal The Incredible Genetic Origins of The Goths
The Goths, an East Germanic tribe renowned for their fierce opposition to the Roman Empire. Frequently referenced in ancient texts they had a significant impact on European history during the Migration Period. This video seeks to elucidate their origins, ethnogenesis, and tribal migrations by integrating newly published archaeogenetic data, archaeological findings, and historical records. The Scandza referenced in Getica is traditionally linked to Scandinavia, while Gothiscandza is associated with present-day Poland.Modern scholars, including Herwig Wolfram, Peter Heather, Anders Kaliff, and Wolf Liebeschuetz, have identified Gothiscandza with the Iron Age Wielbark culture in Poland.

History of the Gepids | Every Year (50 ~ 567)
I apologise in advance for any and all mistakes that may be in this video.
Note:
- I made a small error in the video in 509 AD as the Ostrogoths had ceded a section of land that corresponds to modern day eastern Syrmia to the Eastern Roman Empire and I forgot to show it.
- It is unclear for a lot of the Gepid leaders on when they became King or when they died. Therefore, representations and information may differ from source to source and there maybe some things incorrect in the video.
- Portraits or coins with the Gepid leaders did not exist at all except for Ardaric, which was also a later recreation by a medieval artist. Therefore, I decided to AI generate the portraits of the Gepid Kings myself using Midjourney AI.

The Vandals Part 1
c. 200 BCE to 408 CE
I introduce the Vandals with a cold. The Vandals don't have a cold, I have a cold. So, sorry about that.
The Vandals rose up next door to the Goths, with whom they would have a complicated relationship. This episode tracks their early migration into Gaul and then Spain, and talks a little bit about what their home life would have been like. There's also a bonus tribe, as we sketch a bit about the Alans.
And as promised, I learned to pronounce "Przeworsk"

They practised both cremation and inhumation funeral rituals. It is why in the skeletal graves of representatives of the Wielbark culture fragments of fabrics and textile tools have been preserved: mainly spindle whorls and needles, but also the remains of the spindles themselves in the form of the so-called hooked pins with wooden residue of the shaft. Receiving research funding from the National Science Center (grant no. 2021/40/C/HS3/00121) made it possible to conduct comprehensive analyzes of textiles and textile tools from three cemeteries of the Wielbark culture population from Czarnówko, Lubowidz and Wilkowo. As part of the research, a number of experimental works were carried out, e.g. in the field of spinning and dyeing fabrics. This made it possible to compare the parameters and quality of the threads used in the archaeological fabrics discovered in these three necropolises with the yarn obtained during experiments with copies of spindles from the same sites.

The Goths where one of the tribal groups that invaded the Roman empire, to eventually annihilate it’s western part. The origin of the Goths however is vailed in the mist of pre-history. There are at least two hypotheses concerning the origin of Goths. One of them assumes that the homeland of the Goths was located in the southernmost part of the Germanic territories other than in Scandinavia and the other that southern Scandinavia was the homeland of the Goths. This review is of a paper that uses Ancient DNA to shed light on the origin and migration of the Goths. The Wielbark and Chernyakhov cultures are put in a context of Goth migration and expansion.
