The Antarctic Ocean is WEIRD
We made this video in partnership with the Bik Lab at University of Georgia and the National Science Foundation.
Life in Antarctica's ocean has followed a completely different evolutionary path from other ocean life because of how cold and isolated the ocean is.

WARSHIP Hit By Monster Wave Near Antarctica [4K]
During a patrol search against illegal fishing of tooth-fish poachers this royal navy warship got smashed frontally by a huge monster wave. The incident happened near Antarctica. Subscribe for extreme weather content ► https://www.youtube.com/c/LicetStudios?sub_confirmation=1
With a maximum depth of about 7,434 meters (24,390 ft) and temperatures between -2-10 °C (25-50 °F), the Southern Ocean is known for its tough weather conditions – it is the coldest and windiest ocean on Earth. The latitudes from 50 to 70 degrees south are also known as the "Furious Fifties" and "Shrieking Sixties" due to strong winds and large waves caused by the winds that blow around the globe in those areas. Circulation of the Southern Ocean
Chief Investigator, Dr Andy Hogg, from the ANU hub of ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science worked with UNSW collaborators and the National Computational Infrastructure’s VizLab team, using a high-resolution ocean model, to produce the animation.
The visualization has revealed underwater ocean storms generated by eddies, waterfalls of cold dense water that plummet two kilometres off the Antarctic Continental Shelf into the abyss and underwater waves hundreds of metres high.

Real Reason Ships Don't Pass Under South America (It's Not the Distance)
Most understand that the construction of the Panama Canal was necessary in order to significantly reduce the travel time of going around the tip of South America.
While that is true, there are also much more treacherous and nefarious reasons why navigators wanted to explore the long way round.
Today we’ll learn more about one of the most dangerous and infamous straits that exists in the world, a rite of passage for some of the most renowned explorers, adventurers, and scientists humanity has produced, and a region ordinary mariners and commercial ships avoid at all costs: The Drake Passage.

Witness the power of the wind and waves and the sheer speed of the Volvo Ocean Race. This never-before-created RAW 100 video gives you a perspective only the sailors ever really experience.
The Southern Ocean is a place like no other: it's unfathomably cold and the waves are taller than houses. It's always grey and the squalls are filled with snow rather than rain.
The wind is relentless too – a calm day is anything under 30 knots (55kph). And, every few years, a group of sailors head down to the Roaring 40s (and 50s) in the Volvo Ocean Race to complete the iconic leg from Auckland, NZ to Itaji, Brazil.
