The Whitechapel Vigilance Committee was a group of local volunteers who patrolled the streets of London's Whitechapel District during the period of the Whitechapel murders of 1888. The volunteers patrolled mainly at night in the search of the murderer. The committee was set up by local businessmen who were concerned that the killings were affecting commerce in the area. It was led by George Lusk, a local builder who was elected chairman during the committee's first meeting on 10 September 1888.
Other committee members included Mr. Joseph Aarons, the landlord of The Crown public house on Mile End Road (treasurer), Mr. B. Harris (secretary), and Messrs. Cohen, H. A. Harris, Laughton, Houghton, Lord, Isaacs, Rogers, Mitchell, Barnett, Hodgkins, Lindsay, Reeves, and Jacobs. The Daily Telegraph reported on 5 October 1888 that the leading members of the committee were "drawn principally from the trading class, and include a builder, a cigar-manufacturer, a tailor, a picture-frame maker, a licensed victualler, and 'an actor.'" The latter was probably the entertainer Charles Reeves.
A vigilance committee was a group formed of private citizens to administer law and order where they considered governmental structures to be inadequate. The term is commonly associated with the frontier areas of the American West in the mid-19th century, where groups attacked cattle rustlers and gangs, and people at gold mining claims. As such groups operated outside the law, they sometimes took excessive actions and even sometimes killed innocent people without knowing it. In the years prior to the Civil War, groups worked to free slaves and transport them to freedom.
In the West
In the western United States, both before and after the Civil War, the primary purpose of these committees was to maintain law and order and administer summary justice where governmental law enforcement was inadequate. In the newly settled areas, vigilance committees provided security, and mediated land disputes. In ranching areas, they ruled on ranch boundaries, registered brands, and protected cattle and horses. In the mining districts, they protected claims, settled claim disputes, and attempted to protect miners and other residents. In California, some residents formed vigilance committees to take control from officials whom they considered to be corrupt.
A vigilance committee is an unofficial grouping within a trade union, formed for the purpose of putting pressure on that union's leadership to pursue alternative policies or to pursue existing policies with increased vigour. Vigilance committees are usually formed when large numbers of union members disagree with the union's official policy, believe that they cannot trust the leadership to protect their interests properly, or that it is necessary for union members to scrutinise the actions of the leadership. In the United Kingdom, vigilance committees were widespread during the 1920s, appearing, for example, amongst seamen, dockers and railwaymen. These vigilance committees were influenced by communist militants of the National Minority Movement. Vigilance committees were also common in 1940s or 1950s, although by this stage most such bodies did not use the term vigilance committee, preferring alternate terms such as Reform Movement.
It is located 3.4 miles (5.5km) east of Charing Cross and roughly bounded by Middlesex Street and Mansell Street to the west, Fashion Street to the north, Cambridge Heath Road and Sidney Street to the east and The Highway to the south.
Because the area is close to the London Docklands and east of the city, it has been a popular place for immigrants and the working class. The area was the centre of the London Jewish community in the 19th and early 20th century, and the location of the infamous Whitechapel Murders believed to involve Jack the Ripper in the late 1880s. In the latter half of the 20th century, Whitechapel has become a significant settlement for the British Bangladeshi community, particularly on Whitechapel Road and Brick Lane.
History
Whitechapel's heart is Whitechapel High Street, extending further east as Whitechapel Road, named after a small chapel of ease dedicated to St Mary. The church's earliest known rector was Hugh de Fulbourne in 1329. Around 1338, it became the parish church of Whitechapel, called, for unknown reasons, St Mary Matfelon. The church was destroyed through enemy action in World War II and its location and graveyard is now a public garden on the south side of the road.
Whitechapel is the fourth studio album by the American deathcore band Whitechapel. It was released worldwide on June 19, 2012, through Metal Blade Records. This is the first album to feature drummer Ben Harclerode. The album cover is an image of the Flag of Tennessee (paying homage to the band's home state) inside of the band's trademark saw blade.
History and background
On April 30, Whitechapel announced that their fourth album will be self-titled and was released on June 19, 2012. They released a new song, "Hate Creation", the same day. On May 29, the song "I, Dementia" was released.

Jack The Ripper - The "From Hell" Letter
The "From Hell" Letter (also known as the "Lusk letter") was a letter sent alongside half of a preserved human kidney to the chairman of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee, George Lusk, in October 1888.[3] The author of this letter claimed to be the unidentified serial killer known as Jack the Ripper, who had murdered and mutilated at least four women in the Whitechapel and Spitalfields districts of London in the two months prior to Lusk receiving this letter, and whose vigilance committee Lusk led in community efforts to assist police in efforts to identify and apprehend the perpetrator.

Attacks ascribed to Jack the Ripper typically involved female prostitutes who lived and worked in the slums of the East End of London whose throats were cut prior to abdominal mutilations. Rumours that the murders were connected intensified in September and October 1888, and letters were received by media outlets and Scotland Yard from a writer or writers purporting to be the murderer. The name "Jack the Ripper" originated in a letter written by someone claiming to be the murderer that was disseminated in the media. Of all the letters from Jack the Ripper that were sent in the wake of the original "Dear Boss" missive, the one that many people believe has the greatest claim to having been sent by the murderer is the "From Hell" letter that was sent to Mr. George Lusk.

They met at the premises of their treasurer, Joseph Aarons, proprietor of the Crown pub on Mile End Road. At their inaugural meeting, they appointed local builder and decorator George Lusk to be their Chairman and President.
Over the next few weeks, George Lusk petitioned the Home Secretary, Sir Henry Matthews, urging him to sanction on official reward for information that might lead to the apprehension of the Whitechapel murder. His entreaties, however, consistently met with official rejections.
But, his battle with the Government was covered extensively by the newspapers, and, as a consequence, his name appeared in the papers on a daily basis throughout the first two weeks of October, 1888.
As a result, he attracted the attention of several unsavoury characters and by the 10th of October he was being stalked by some of these.
Once again, the newspapers gave maximum coverage to Mr Lusk's problems with these stalkers, and this brought him to the attention of a Jack the Ripper letters writer, and he too began to receive letters from Jack the Ripper.
Then, on the evening of Tuesday, 16th October, a small package was delivered to his house in Alderney Road, Mile End. Inside was a letter addressed "From Hell" and wrapped inside it was a portion of kidney, which, on being examined by several doctors, was declared to be a portion of human kidney,
The letter's author, claimed that the kidney was part of the kidney that had been removed from Catherine Eddowes, who had been murdered in Mitre Square in the early hours of the 30th of September, 1888.
In this video Richard Jones looks at the circumstances behind the receipt of the kidney by George Lusk, and presents the case both for and against its having been sent by the murderer.

Attacks ascribed to Jack the Ripper typically involved female prostitutes who lived and worked in the slums of the East End of London whose throats were cut prior to abdominal mutilations. The removal of internal organs from at least three of the victims led to proposals that their killer had some anatomical or surgical knowledge. Rumours that the murders were connected intensified in September and October 1888, and letters were received by media outlets and Scotland Yard from a writer or writers purporting to be the murderer. The name "Jack the Ripper" originated in a letter written by someone claiming to be the murderer that was disseminated in the media. The letter is widely believed to have been a hoax and may have been written by journalists in an attempt to heighten interest in the story and increase their newspapers' circulation. The "From Hell" letter received by George Lusk of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee came with half of a preserved human kidney, purportedly taken from one of the victims. The public came increasingly to believe in a single serial killer known as "Jack the Ripper", mainly because of the extraordinarily brutal nature of the murders, and because of media treatment of the events.
