ONLINE COURSE REVIEW by Jeff Calof ...
"With each passing year, the foundations of cinema and, specifically, cinema comedy recede further from the public’s collective memory and, sadly, the interest of the youngest generations. While the great comedies are now ironically more accessible than ever through DVD/Blu-Rays, Turner Classic Movies, Streaming Services, and YouTube, the reality is that any exposure or enticement is either through sheer luck, perhaps flipping through hundreds of channels or online videos, or by introduction through a mentor such as a parent or classroom instructor. Movie theaters rarely revive them, nor do the standard broadcast channels. It’s no wonder that the great film comedians who were once household names are now simply ghosts of both an era and comedic language fading ever faster from our awareness and consideration.
Thankfully, all is not lost when you have someone as passionate and knowledgeable as Nick Santa Maria, inviting you to join him in this magical world created by the great producers and comics of the silent and sound eras. A brilliant performer himself (both onstage and screen), he grew up in an age when the local television stations regularly scheduled these classic films. Consistent exposure to them led to his comprehensive understanding of the great comedians, developing a kinship and goal to share their histories and entertainment genius with anyone open to entering their enchanted realm. “For the Love of Laughter” is a perfect opportunity to join him, either to broaden one’s own awareness or, and perhaps more importantly, to introduce oneself or the next generation to a comedic world they may have never heard about or felt comfortable enough to explore on their own.
We meet the great silent era comedic producers such as Mack Sennett and Hal Roach who collectively gave so many of the master comics their first opportunities and provided the resources for them to flourish in so many wonderful films. Nick takes us through the progression of the master silent comics such as Arbuckle, Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, Langdon… even Our Gang (more ubiquitously now known as The Little Rascals). Less well-known, though not necessarily ‘lesser’, comics are highlighted such as the female comedy team of Anita Garvin & Marion Byron as well as Larry Semon. Nick explains how each built their comedic styles based upon the foundations laid by those that came before them.
As silent films transitioned to sound, the next generations of film comics move to the forefront as we meet Laurel and Hardy, The Marx Brothers, W.C. Fields…even Mae West. Nick delves into how television and radio helped audiences find, and embrace, those that came next including The Three Stooges, Abbot and Costello, and Bob Hope. Jerry Lewis, the last of the studio-system comics, closes out the history (and Nick is sure to include his one-time partner, Dean Martin, in the overview).
Since film is a visual medium, after providing histories and context Nick lets the great comics ‘speak for themselves’ with judicious film excerpts for each. Some of the clips are what you’d expect (e.g., Harold Lloyd’s brilliant ‘hanging from the clock face’ in ‘Safety Last’), but many are rarities that even aficionados might not anticipate (e.g., The Marx Brothers performing a skit taken from their Broadway show ‘I’ll Say She Is’, recorded for the Paramount promotional film ‘The House that Shadows Built’). It all makes sense within the context of Nick’s framing presentations.
15 lessons in 4 hours may seem like a lot of time on the surface, yet it flies by in a flash thanks to the material and congeniality of the host. In fact, I wanted more… which is probably the best outcome “For the Love of Laughter” can generate. Learn about these amazing craftsmen, better understand who they are – and then seek out their films to enjoy for yourself. That’s what a great teacher will do, inspire. As this course so aptly proves, Nick is indeed a great teacher.
My thanks to Nick Santa Maria, for not only keeping the brilliance of these great artists alive, but for now making them instantly accessible for the next generations.”
