Human resource management
Human resource management (HRM, or simply HR) is a function in organizations designed to maximize employee performance in service of an employer's strategic objectives. HR is primarily concerned with the management of people within organizations, focusing on policies and on systems. HR departments and units in organizations typically undertake a number of activities, including employee benefits design employee recruitment, "training and development", performance appraisal, and rewarding (e.g., managing pay and benefit systems). HR also concerns itself with industrial relations, that is, the balancing of organizational practices with requirements arising from collective bargaining and from governmental laws. According to R. Buettner, HRM covers the following core areas:
HR is a product of the human relations movement of the early 20th century, when researchers began documenting ways of creating business value through the strategic management of the workforce. The function was initially dominated by transactional work, such as payroll and benefits administration, but due to globalization, company consolidation, technological advances, and further research, HR as of 2015 focuses on strategic initiatives like mergers and acquisitions, talent management, succession planning, industrial and labor relations, and diversity and inclusion.

Resource management
In organizational studies, resource management is the efficient and effective development of an organization's resources when they are needed. Such resources may include financial resources, inventory, human skills, production resources, or information technology (IT).
In the realm of project management, processes, techniques and philosophies as to the best approach for allocating resources have been developed. These include discussions on functional vs. cross-functional resource allocation as well as processes espoused by organizations like the Project Management Institute (PMI) through their Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) methodology of project management. Resource management is a key element to activity resource estimating and project human resource management. Both are essential components of a comprehensive project management plan to execute and monitor a project successfully. As is the case with the larger discipline of project management, there are resource management software tools available that automate and assist the process of resource allocation to projects and portfolio resource transparency including supply and demand of resources. The goal of these tools typically is to ensure that: (i) there are employees within our organization with required specific skill set and desired profile required for a project, (ii) decide the number and skill sets of new employees to hire, and (iii) allocate the workforce to various projects.

Game mechanics
Game mechanics are constructs of rules or methods designed for interaction with the game state, thus providing gameplay. All games use mechanics; however, theories and styles differ as to their ultimate importance to the game. In general, the process and study of game design, or ludology, are efforts to come up with game mechanics that allow for people playing a game to have an engaging, but not necessarily fun, experience.
The interaction of various game mechanics in a game determines the complexity and level of player interaction in the game, and in conjunction with the game's environment and resources determine game balance. Some forms of game mechanics have been used in games for centuries, while others are relatively new, having been invented within the past decade.
Complexity in game mechanics should not be confused with depth or even realism. Go is perhaps one of the simplest of all games, yet exhibits extraordinary depth of play. Most computer or video games feature mechanics that are technically complex (in terms of making a human do all the calculations involved) even in relatively simple designs.

Resource management (computing)
In computer programming, resource management refers to techniques for managing resources (components with limited availability). It includes both preventing resource leaks (releasing a resource when a process has finished using it) and dealing with resource contention (when multiple processes wish to access a limited resource). Resource leaks are an issue in sequential computing, while resource contention is an issue in concurrent computing. This article discusses preventing resource leaks; see resource contention for resource management in that sense.
Memory can be treated as a resource, but memory management is usually considered separately, primarily because memory allocation and deallocation is significantly more frequent than acquisition and release of other resources, such as file handles.
Computer programs may manage their own resources, and there are various techniques for resource management, depending on the programming language; Elder, Jackson & Liblit (2008) is a survey article contrasting different approaches. Alternatively, they can be managed by a host – an operating system or virtual machine – or another program. This is known as resource tracking, and consists of cleaning up resource leaks: terminating access to resources that have been acquired but not released after use. This is known as reclaiming resources, and is analogous to garbage collection for memory. On many systems the operating system reclaims resources after the process makes the exit system call.

To best understand human resource management, we will look at a brief history, understand the roles human resource management plays in organizations and review a model to best organize the functional areas of human resource management.
What is now called human resource management has evolved a great deal since its beginnings around the year 1900. Personnel departments, which emerged as a clearly defined field by the 1920s (at least in the US), was largely concerned technical functions. What began as a primarily clerical operation in larger companies concerned with payroll and employee records began to face changes with the social legislation of the 1960s. HRM developed in response to the increase in competitive business organizations experienced by the late 1970s as a result of deregulation and rapid technological change. In the 1990s, globalization and competition required human resource departments to become more concerned with costs, planning, and the implications of various HR strategies for both organizations and their employees.
The role of human resource management professionals has dramatically evolved over the years. If an organization has a formal HR group (perhaps a department) there are typically three different roles that group might play in the organization.
The strategic role links human resource stagey with organizational mission and the work of people in the organization. The operational role manages functional human resource activities and serving an ‘employee champion.’ And the administrative role provides recordkeeping, process administration and compliance efforts.
The pinwheel human resource management model suggest that the management of human resources in an organization centers eight key functional areas. These functions are a collection of specialized human resource management work. For each functional area, Human Resource Professionals are responsible for key activities.
This human resource model should give you context to understand and apply the important role human resource management plays in today’s organizations.

Resource capacity and demand management (Resource Management for short) is one of the biggest pain points for organizations. It’s also one of the most requested features in Microsoft Project and other project management solutions.
Many organizations are not getting the results they’re looking for because they struggle with the effort (discipline) required to maintain good data, not to mention a lack of tools to support ever-changing project needs, priorities, and resource availability.
Long term planning is best done with generic roles in formal resource requests. Then, once the proposal or project is approved on its merits, the resource manager can allocate named individuals that the project manager can assign to the detailed tasks on the project.
This approach enables organizations to look at resource demand further in the future without the need to specify named individuals right away. When coupled with an understanding of team capacity, this enables organizations to anticipate hiring needs and to match their demand with recruiting timelines.
Having project managers and resource managers collaborate in a single tool is key, along with having real-time data to monitor for any exceptions. The process is not complex, but it does require on-going monitoring and adjustments as things change.
These challenges can all be overcome with a best-practices approach to resource management and a bit of attention to variances and exceptions.

Ideally, this should be done at the proposal stage, using generic roles instead of named individuals, especially if the planning is done months in advance. Game mechanics often come "first" in the development phase, with a narrative being tacked on later. But when game mechanics become separated from story, the disjunct makes for a bad experience as players become impatient or disinterested. However many of the best games, from Shadow of the Colossus to Dark Souls, have mechanics that enhance the mood created by the story and the characters, and visa versa. Achieving that synthesis is key to the field of narrative design in video games.

HR Basics is a series of short courses, designed to highlight what you need to know about a particular human resource management topic. In today’s HR Basics, we define human resource management with a simple model.
Before we explore the model, lets define human resource management. Human Resource Management comprise the formal systems designed to manage people in an organization. To best understand human resource management, we will look at a brief history, understand the roles human resource management plays in organizations and review a model to best organize the functional areas of human resource management.
What is now called human resource management has evolved a great deal since its beginnings around the year 1900. Personnel departments, which emerged as a clearly defined field by the 1920s (at least in the US), was largely concerned technical functions. What began as a primarily clerical operation in larger companies concerned with payroll and employee records began to face changes with the social legislation of the 1960s. HRM developed in response to the increase in competitive business organizations experienced by the late 1970s as a result of deregulation and rapid technological change. In the 1990s, globalization and competition required human resource departments to become more concerned with costs, planning, and the implications of various HR strategies for both organizations and their employees.
The role of human resource management professionals has dramatically evolved over the years. If an organization has a formal HR group (perhaps a department) there are typically three different roles that group might play in the organization.
The strategic role links human resource stagey with organizational mission and the work of people in the organization. The operational role manages functional human resource activities and serving an ‘employee champion.’ And the administrative role provides recordkeeping, process administration and compliance efforts.
The pinwheel human resource management model suggest that the management of human resources in an organization centers eight key functional areas. These functions are a collection of specialized human resource management work. For each functional area, Human Resource Professionals are responsible for key activities.
This human resource model should give you context to understand and apply the important role human resource management plays in today’s organizations.

Human resource management
Human resource management (HRM, or simply HR) is a function in organizations designed to maximize employee performance in service of an employer's strategic objectives. HR is primarily concerned with the management of people within organizations, focusing on policies and on systems. HR departments and units in organizations typically undertake a number of activities, including employee benefits design employee recruitment, "training and development", performance appraisal, and rewarding (e.g., managing pay and benefit systems). HR also concerns itself with industrial relations, that is, the balancing of organizational practices with requirements arising from collective bargaining and from governmental laws. According to R. Buettner, HRM covers the following core areas:
HR is a product of the human relations movement of the early 20th century, when researchers began documenting ways of creating business value through the strategic management of the workforce. The function was initially dominated by transactional work, such as payroll and benefits administration, but due to globalization, company consolidation, technological advances, and further research, HR as of 2015 focuses on strategic initiatives like mergers and acquisitions, talent management, succession planning, industrial and labor relations, and diversity and inclusion.

Resource capacity and demand management (Resource Management for short) is one of the biggest pain points for organizations. It’s also one of the most requested features in Microsoft Project and other project management solutions.
Many organizations are not getting the results they’re looking for because they struggle with the effort (discipline) required to maintain good data, not to mention a lack of tools to support ever-changing project needs, priorities, and resource availability.
Long term planning is best done with generic roles in formal resource requests. Then, once the proposal or project is approved on its merits, the resource manager can allocate named individuals that the project manager can assign to the detailed tasks on the project.
This approach enables organizations to look at resource demand further in the future without the need to specify named individuals right away. When coupled with an understanding of team capacity, this enables organizations to anticipate hiring needs and to match their demand with recruiting timelines.
Having project managers and resource managers collaborate in a single tool is key, along with having real-time data to monitor for any exceptions. The process is not complex, but it does require on-going monitoring and adjustments as things change.
These challenges can all be overcome with a best-practices approach to resource management and a bit of attention to variances and exceptions.
The first step in the process is for the project manager to submit a formal resource request, which you can think of as the resource budget for the project. Ideally, this should be done at the proposal stage, using generic roles instead of named individuals, especially if the planning is done months in advance. If the proposal is approved, it becomes a project
In a typical portfolio, organizations will have proposals that have not yet been approved but that are requesting resources. There will also be approved projects with only a high-level resource plan. And then there will be active projects with detailed scope and assignments.
To get a complete picture of the demand on resources, our reports and dashboards must be able to view both proposed and approved allocations and hold these up against the actual work and tasks on projects.

Mechanics and Tone - How Does Gameplay Relate to Story? - Extra Credits

Game mechanics often come "first" in the development phase, with a narrative being tacked on later. But when game mechanics become separated from story, the disjunct makes for a bad experience as players become impatient or disinterested. However many of the best games, from Shadow of the Colossus to Dark Souls, have mechanics that enhance the mood created by the story and the characters, and visa versa. Achieving that synthesis is key to the field of narrative design in video games.
