What is international law? An animated explainer
What is international law and why is it important? As the world sees the devastation caused by climate change, as the availability of fresh water becomes more and more limited, and as corporations become bigger than countries and race to Mars, what is the responsibility of countries and companies to current and future generations? What is the role of international law – and where is it lacking? Can it help protect individuals and manage the behaviour of countries and companies? Is international law even worth the paper it is written on?
We examine how individuals can use international law to create positive change – and even change the law itself.

International Law and Its Functions, visualized By Hesham Elrafei , Lex Animata
International Law Vs National Law: What's The Difference?
International law consists of rules and norms regulating interactions among states, international organizations, and individuals.
It provides a framework for resolving disputes and safeguarding states from one another.
But what is the difference between domestic law and international law?
As in local jurisdictions, laws serve many functions. It sets a body of expectations, provides order, maintains the status quo, and justifies the use of force by a government to maintain order.
The law operates in a hierarchical system at the domestic level, where the law is created by the parliament or the government and enforc...

International Law Characteristics Public International Law explained
What are the characteristics of international law?
The international legal system is decentralized and based on consensus.
In the absence of a global parliament, International law is created mainly in two ways: through state practice and international agreements.
Once international rules are established, they become legally binding and cannot be changed unilaterally by one state.
The lack of strong law enforcement is one of the weaknesses of international law, as there is no global police force, nor is there an international court with obligatory jurisdiction.
However, If international law is broken, victim states might respond individually or collectively by using a variety of countermeasures.
A state can, for example, terminate or suspend a treaty, freeze the violating state's...

Overview of the sources of international public law as stated in Article 38 of the international court of justice ICJ statute : treaty, customary law, courts decisions, jurisprudence, and law principles.
What are the sources of international law?
The term ‘source of law’ refers to legal rules governing the international community.
Unlike national laws, where sources of law are specified in a norm superior to laws and regulations, usually a constitution, no such norm exists in international law.
The International Court of Justice stipulated a catalog of sources of international law,
which is used when deciding legal disputes submitted before the world court.
the first source is international treaties, whether a general or particular treaty, a bilateral, regional or multinational one, a treaty is a binding international agreement. by which the countries are obliged to observe their contractual obligations. the 2nd source is customary law.
At the outset, international law was mainly constituted by customs. which is by its nature, universal, whereas treaty law binds the parties to these treaties only. International custom consists of 2 elements: First is State practice, which means What generally States Do and Say. Oppinio Juris is the 2nd element of customary law. It means that the state practice has to be accepted as law, by the other states.
In addition to treaties and customs, other sources exist, such as Judicial decisions, juristic writings, and general principles of law. while they are not formal sources, they can still play an important role as evidence of the law.

The law operates in a hierarchical system at the domestic level, where the law is created by the parliament or the government and enforced by the courts and police.
Therefore Individuals are bound by the rule of law, as maintaining order and predictability is in everyone's best interests. Still, if the law is broken, state officials can bring violators to justice and use state power to punish them.
On the other hand, international law functions horizontally where authoritative structures are absent. There is no global government, no international parliament, or international courts with mandatory jurisdiction.
In the absence of a sovereign body with enforcement authority and the inability to force compliance through effective physical coercion, international legal rules obtain their force because they have been widely accepted as rules of conduct by states.

A state can, for example, terminate or suspend a treaty, freeze the violating state's assets, and impose sanctions if necessary.
Powerful states can also use the United Nations Security Council to apply economic sanctions or even launch military intervention on rogue states.
In international law, the function of reciprocity and equality is critical, as it is in a state's interest to cooperate and to respect the sovereignty of other states in exchange for their respecting its own.
International law was born out of State's need to co-exist and thus is designed to promote peace and harmonization.#internationallaw characteristics
